The Boston Red Sox have made multiple moves to improve their roster over the 2024 team. They began by acquiring Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler in the starting rotation, though these two won’t be enough to give Boston one of baseball’s top pitching staffs.
Boston could look to swing another blockbuster trade to land a former Cy Young winner to help complete their pitching staff. Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara will likely land on the trade block this season, and the Red Sox could be the perfect landing spot for the star pitcher. Alcantara was the best pitcher in baseball during the 2022 season.
That year, he posted a 2.28 ERA in 228.2 dominant innings. The following season, he returned to earth with a decent 4.14 ERA. Alcantara would suffer a torn UCL, which forced him to miss the entire 2024 season. There were a lot of question marks about how he would return from this injury. In spring training this year, the righty has silenced all the doubters. He’s routinely up to 98-100 MPH with his fastball. His command and movement have looked like it did during his Cy Young year.
If he can put together five or six solid starts to begin the season, the Marlins will almost certainly throw him on the trade block. With this in mind, the first landing spot for the righty is the Red Sox. Boston has been incredibly aggressive to upgrade, and it has the pieces to deal away. Both Wilyer Abreu and Triston Casas have been floated as potential trade pieces. Obviously, some top prospects could go in the deal, too.
Either way, there likely wouldn’t be much stopping Boston from aggressively pursuing Alcantara if and when he lands on the trade block.
