Khem Birch’s availability as a free agent was first reported by NBA Insider Shams Charania earlier today via X/Twitter. The Boston Celtics took advantage of this opportunity to fill a critical frontcourt bench need after losing Robert Willams III in the Jrue Holiday trade by signing him for a bargain.
Birch, who played high school basketball in Massachusetts, is eligible to return to the region where he had early success in his playing career. All preseason long, the Cs have struggled to find a certain solution at the pivot spot.
The Boston Celtics must address their size issue if they want to win the Eastern Conference, which currently seems to be a two-team competition.
By adding Birch, the Cs would have a seasoned NBA player who could wear down Giannis as he attempted to attack the hoop. When the two teams face off, Birch may play a significant role in creating the wall that will prevent the Greek Freak from controlling the game while also providing Kristaps Porzingis and Al Hortford with valuable rest time.

It would be a little miracle for the Boston Celtics to fill a roster void at a discount this late in the preseason, but these types of tiny miracles are often required on the route to an NBA Championship. A lucky playoff run in which rival clubs suffered several injuries has shaped many legacies.
Although Birch may not seem to be a significant signing to most people, the razor-thin margins for a championship mean that even little deals may have a profound impact.
