Gray looks set to be the Rabbitohs’ new No.1 in 2026 after reports emerged on Friday that he’d knocked back a potential switch to R360. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Gray was offered a deal worth more than $900,000 to move to the rebel rugby competition – a huge jump from his current deal with Souths worth less than $200,000.
But the report says Gray has weighed up the threat of a 10-year NRL ban if he joins R360, and has instead decided to commit his future to Souths. Gray is expected to put pen to paper on a new extension with the Rabbitohs in coming days.
And the 21-year-old will have the chance to cement his spot as the Rabbitohs’ first-choice fullback after a number of impressive displays in 2025 saw calls grow louder for Bennett to hand him the role permanently and move Mitchell to centre. Gray was consistently one of the Bunnies’ best when he filled in at fullback for Mitchell this year, and his electric early season form even saw the livewire No.1 lead the Dally M Medal count at one point.
