Stephen McGinn has delivered his verdict on Rangers signing Sheffield United striker Oli McBurnie in the January transfer window.
The BBC pundit does not feel that he improves the Gers frontline and also might be on high wages at the Premier League club.
Gers also brought in a number of attacking players this summer with Cyriel Dessers, Sam Lammers, Danillo and Abdallah Sima all joining.
McGinn told Go Radio, as quoted by Football Scotland, “I don’t know how it works in terms of him being a Scot, because obviously Celtic and Rangers need a certain number of Scots for their European squads. Does Oli McBurnie improve Rangers frontline just now?
“Maybe but it’s not a banker. I think the wages he is on at Sheffield United and could command in England, I’m not sure.”
Given the system Clement wants to employ at Ibrox, McBurnie does not seem to be the right option for him.
His playing style and attributes do not align with the playing philosophy typically favoured by the club focusing on a fast-paced, high-pressing and dynamic attacking style,
McBurnie, on the other hand, is more of a traditional centre forward, known for his physical presence and ability in the air.
He’ll be a good Plan B to bring off the bench when the chips are down but not one you’d want starting games week in and week out.
McGinn also makes a very good point about his wage demands and the club aren’t going to break their structure for a player like him.
There are plenty of better options out there if that indeed is the plan for Clement in January but he may want to strengthen in other positions.
