Burnley have already made two signings following promotion to the Premier League and the summer window has not even opened officially yet.
Jordan Beyer has seen his loan spell from Borussia Monchengladbach converted into a permanent move. The central defender has agreed a four-year contract with the Clarets which was confirmed just days after the end of the season as Burnley sealed top spot in the Championship.
Michael Obafemi’s loan move from Swansea City has also been converted into a permanent transfer. It means Burnley have so far snapped up two of the six players they had on loan in their successful season.
Attention now turns to how many of the other players that had a successful temporary time at Turf Moor can be recruited once again this summer ahead of the step up to the Premier League. The Clarets are in a rare position in that many of their loan signings have been successes.
There are four other players who have been on loan at Turf Moor in the recently concluded campaign. Of these, Halil Dervisoglu of Brentford is unlikely to return after a spell in which he scored once in nine games and was firmly down the pecking order for Vincent Kompany in the final third.
The other three, however, were key cogs as the Clarets marched to the Championship title. Southampton’s Nathan Tella was the club’s top scorer with 19 goals, while Ian Maatsen of Chelsea was the club’s first-choice left-back and Taylor Harwood-Bellis impressed in the heart of defence in his campaign away from Manchester City.
Both Maatsen and Harwood-Bellis have a year left to go on their contracts at their respective parent clubs. Talks are planned with the players and the top-flight outfits about their futures and the prospect of potential new deals.
Tella, meanwhile, has two years left on his deal at the Saints and it remains to be seen what happens with his future. Burnley want him to return but the St Mary’s side are under no immediate pressure to sell and could keep the attacker and use him to spearhead their efforts to gain promotion next season.
Whatever the Clarets opt to do with their loan signings from this season, they will be hoping for similar success in that market this summer. However, things will be different this time around as they head back to the Premier League.
A big difference in the EFL is that clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two can name up to five loan players in a matchday squad. Moreover, there is theoretically no limit to the number of players a club can sign on loan and more than one player can be obtained from the same team.
However, that will be different back in the top flight. According to the Premier League’s Handbook for this current season, clubs can only sign one player on loan at any one time from a fellow Premier League team, meaning Burnley could not have multiple players from the same top-flight side.
Also, top-flight clubs can only have two players on loan at any one time from other Premier League sides, and can only sign a maximum of four players on loan over the course of the season.
Premier League teams cannot loan more than one goalkeeper to a fellow top-flight side, and they also cannot send out a player just acquired in the same transfer window on loan.
However, the rules make it clear the above only applies to Premier League and English loans, and that ones done with foreign clubs do not count towards these quotas. So theoretically, Premier League teams can sign more than one player on loan from the same club in France, Spain, Germany, Italy and so on.
