Portsmouth Are Set To Welcome Back Forward After Cancellation Of His Loan Deal At United

Championship side Portsmouth are set to welcome back forward Anthony Scully following the cancellation of his loan deal at League Two Colchester United.

The winger has suffered a dreadful few years, having struggled to maintain his fitness and earn gametime. He departed Lincoln City in 2022 after appearing 35 times in the league in his final full season at the club. However, so far, he has failed to appear more than six times in the league for Colchester, Portsmouth, or Wigan Athletic.

Not only this but he has also only contributed one goal since leaving the Imps, in an EFL Trophy fixture for Colchester United.

Now, according to reports, he has returned to his parent club after Danny Cowley’s side cancelled the deal with the attacker sidelined until March.

A Never Ending Story for Portsmouth and Scully

Scully had the world at his feet, he was one of the most talented attackers in League One for Lincoln City, having scored 15+ goals in all competitions for two seasons in a row. However, what came after has been a nightmare for the Irishman.

So where is Anthony Scully? Portsmouth boss clears up Colchester confusion

His move to Wigan Athletic, then in the Championship, failed to gain any momentum. Despite being fit he was left out of the squad completely before his injury problems began to pick up.

His move to Portsmouth appeared to be a fresh start, but again he found himself sidelined for much of the season, and every return was met with more injury woes.

A move to Danny Cowley’s Colchester United then appeared to be a logical step. League Two football for a manager that is known for getting the best out of players. But even the former Huddersfield Town manager couldn’t prevent him being sidelined again.

It is horrible to see for any player, especially one that is only just 25 and had shown a huge amount of potential prior to his move away from Sincil Bank.

It begs the question: What comes next?

He is unlikely to be offered a new contract at Portsmouth, and unlikely to play against between now and the end of the season.

What club would take a chance on a player with less than 20 league appearances over 3 years and an injury list longer than his goal list.

Hopefully he can resolve the issue but it is difficult to see much of a future in the EFL as it stands.
