The Carolina Panthers made an intriguing roster move ahead of Week 1.
According to Panthers insider Mike Kaye, the team recently released former first-round pick K’Lavon Chaisson.
“Panthers save $2m on the cap with a $500k dead money penalty…(Chaisson) Didn’t really have a noticeably dominant or strong camp…Not particularly a good sign when you can’t claim a starting job with the current group in place and you’re a former first-round pick,” Kaye wrote.
The former 20th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft will now be looking for a new team at the start of the season.
Chaisson spent the first four seasons of his career in Jacksonville before joining Carolina this offseason.
A former national champion and All-SEC performer at LSU, Chaisson has not been able to hit his stride in the league yet.
He has started in just 11 games out of the 57 total that he has played in.
He also has just five career sacks and 73 career tackles in four years.
He had to sit behind Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker for a couple of years with his playing time diminishing in the process.
Going to Carolina was originally a good decision because the Panthers are a rebuilding team and could use all of the help they can get.
But in the end, Chaisson and the Panthers just did not work.
Time will certainly tell to see if Chaisson can find a new home in time for the start of the regular season, which is nearly here.
