Packers Set To Land $220 Million Quarterback Who Has Already Requested To Leave

Business has officially picked up for the Seattle Seahawks this offseason after the team traded quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday. Now, the Seahawks will turn their attention to wide receiver DK Metcalf.

Of course, Metcalf requested a trade from Seattle this week. ESPN’s Adam Schefter notes that Metcalf is looking to join a contender, and other reports suggest he’s looking for a stable quarterback situation and a place that has warm weather.

While it looks like Metcalf’s days in Seattle are numbered, there has been renewed hope that perhaps Metcalf could choose to stay in Seattle in the wake of the Smith trade with the Raiders, as ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry wrote.

“Along with the likely scenario the Seahawks will sign Sam Darnold at QB, there’s some optimism this could alter the conversation with receiver DK Metcalf, who has requested a trade,” Thiry wrote.

Thiry mentions Sam Darnold, who the Seahawks have been linked to after trading Smith. It remains to be seen if Darnold would be enough for Metcalf to change his mind, though. After all, he clearly wasn’t thrilled with catching passes from a two-time Pro Bowler in Smith.

If the Seahawks’ new quarterback plan isn’t enough to appease Metcalf, CBS Sports’ Garrett Podell predicts the Green Bay Packers will trade for him.

Two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf requested a trade off of the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday. The 27-year-old has one year remaining on his three-year, $72 million extension, and he would also like a new deal. Metcalf also wants to play for a contender, and the Green Bay Packers can provide that as well after making the postseason two years in a row with the NFL’s youngest roster.

The Packers also have the ability to send a young wide receiver back to Seattle like Romeo Doubs in addition to the Seahawks’ desired draft pick compensation. Armed with $43.3 million in effective cap space, according to OverTheCap.com, general manager Brian Gutekunst could easily pull off a trade and subsequent extension for Metcalf. Gutekunst is famously known for saying the Packers are “in every conservation.” This time, the soft rebuild ends in Green Bay in 2025 as they begin to ramp up their aggression in pursing a Super Bowl title with quarterback Jordan Love leading the way and throwing the ball to Metcalf.

Linking the Packers to a Metcalf trade makes total sense. After all, Green Bay lacks a true No. 1 target for quarterback Jordan Love, something running back Josh Jacobs pointed out recently. Metcalf would instantly check that box.

“We’ve got a really young group of receivers,” Jacobs said. “All can be really, really, really special, but I think personally we need a guy that’s proven to be a No. 1 already, somebody that we know is going to be a little bit more consistent.”

The Seahawks are reportedly looking for a first- and third-round pick in exchange for Metcalf, but that is not going to happen. Instead, we could see Seattle getting a Day 2 pick and a player in return for Metcalf’s services.

Green Bay has four Day 2 picks in total this year, and as Podell points out, they can also offer a young receiver to Seattle, which would be huge for the Seahawks’ wide receivers room, which would be depleted after a Metcalf trade.

From there, the Packers will have to sign Metcalf to an extension, and reports are suggesting he’s seeking around $30 million annually. That shouldn’t be a problem for the Packers, a team that has a good financial situation over the next few years.
