Notts County’s Transfer Scenario Revealed Amid Martin Paterson Decision

Notts County will head into next season with a lot of expectation after missing out on promotion to League One.

The play-offs did not prove to be fruitful for Notts, who lost to eventual winners AFC Wimbledon in the semi-final, and for that Stuart Maynard lost his job at Meadow Lane.

His replacement has been appointed.

Former Burton Albion boss Martin Paterson has stepped into the role, which has brought with it some mixed reactions. His record in League One was not great, but he has been entrusted to guide this team towards the top of the table next time out.

Notts County nightmare scenario predicted

County suffered quite a big loss already this summer when David McGoldrick decided to not accept the contract that he had been offered by the Magpies. Things will get much worse for them if they don’t add more depth across their squad, according to one of Football League World’s Notts fan pundits, Gareth Parr.

“In terms of a nightmare scenario in the transfer window, we’ve had a lot of players not renew their contracts leave the club, we’ve had a few signings come in, but I think we still need to really concentrate on depth,” he said.

“I think historically, especially the last two seasons have shown League Two is a tough place. The number of impact injuries and stuff that I think we’ve been the victim of. They’ve left us really exposed in certain key areas.

“I think we’re really looking for a creative midfield player and possibly one or two strikers to back that up. We have a solid defensive line, but with some injuries that are already in place, and some younger players, we could potentially do with some backup there.

“But then again, ultimately, we have one goalkeeper in the club. So, you know, that’s obviously got to be seen as a potential nightmare scenario if we don’t sign another goalkeeper to back up Alex Bass.”

Notts County must pounce on League Two promotion opening

Opportunity may be around the corner for Notts if they play their cards right. The 2025/26 League Two table is a lot less daunting than the previous one. Last term there were a couple of standout clubs that were picked by many to go up automatically. Aside from MK Dons, who have made a flying start to the window, there aren’t too many true contenders for the top three spots.

Getting themselves up to that point will be easier said than done, especially without McGoldrick. He contributed 17 goals and 3 assists in the league last season.

Finding a player of his quality who can also produce those numbers is a near impossible job for the County recruitment team. But there is certainly scope for an improvement last season if they have a strong performance in the summer window.
