Fulham star Bernd Leno has insisted he is ready to return to the Germany set up, despite turning his back on them last year.
BILD cover comments from Leno today made to them in the mixed zone after the recent win over Tottenham.
The newspaper explains that the Fulham star is currently the ‘number one’ in their goalkeeper rankings but will be watching the next crop of international matches from home.
That’s because he declined a call-up by Germany in October because he insisted, he didn’t want to sit on the bench. Manager Julian Nagelsmann insisted at the time that the door was not closed, but he wasn’t opening it either.
Now it seems the Fulham star wants to keep pushing it further open, sending Nagelsmann a message with his recent comments in the mixed zone.
“The door was never closed for me, and I thought Julian’s reaction to my comments was totally fine. If I get the chance to play for the DFB, I certainly won’t say no,” he is quoted as saying.
The question is whether Germany would call him up. Nagelsmann is certainly looking for a new number one and has to decide between Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel. Neither of those have impressed in the Bundesliga this season, though.
Leno, on the other hand, has been a key player for Fulham once again and boasts several impressive stats, including a 68.3% save percentage.
BILD say that those in charge are holding an ‘internal debate’ over the matter and considering him, something which may now be aided by his latest comments, which could be used as a ‘first step’ back to the national team.
