Mavericks Player Explains Why He And Luka Make The Ideal Team

Luka Doncic plays a brand of basketball infused with Joy - Mavs Moneyball

After four games, the Dallas Mavericks are sitting pretty in the Western Conference, even without Kyrie Irving.

Dallas is off to its first 4-0 start since the 2004-05 season after their victory over the Chicago Bulls, and Luka Doncic is leading them like he never has before.

Doncic is averaging 33.8 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 9.8 assists per game and is dominating in all parts of the game. He is clearly an MVP frontrunner, and Dallas is silencing all of the previous media hate they received before the season.

One Maverick who hasn’t seen the court yet but is still staying locked in on improvement is Dexter Dennis.

Dennis was signed to Dallas’ roster shortly before training camp and ended up earning one of the Mavericks’ two-way spots for the season.

Dennis is known for his defense, and his ability to shut down players on the perimeter combined with his freak athleticism likely earned him this spot. Dennis and Doncic are already close friends, and the rookie seems like he could be the perfect on-court fit next to Doncic and Irving.

“Being that guy to give Luka [Doncic] and Kyrie [Irving] some relief on the defensive end,” Dennis told The Smoking Cuban when asked about his fit on the Mavs. “They have a lot to do on the offensive end..I just want to be the guy that’s gonna play the defense.”

Mavs rookie Dexter Dennis on his fit in Dallas:

“Being that guy to give Luka, Kyrie some relief on the defensive end…Defense is my thing.”

Dennis seems fully locked in on becoming an elite defensive stopper one day, and that’s the exact type of player that thrives next to Luka and Kyrie. They exert so much on offense, and having a stopper on the floor with them definitely helps.

Dennis also detailed that he wants to do the “dirty work” and flourish by doing all the little things. He talked about his ability to rebound, knock down threes off the catch, and create for his teammates.

Dennis is a great fit next to Doncic and Irving because he already knows what his role would be when on the court next to them. He knows that they’d run the show while he would buckle down on defense and hit open shots. You can never have too many players that do the little things, and Dennis seems like he is all about that.

Dennis understands that he likely won’t become a key member of Dallas’ rotation right away, but he remains focused on the task at hand.

“I can definitely see a fit of me plugging in on this team one day,” Dennis said. “Whenever that day comes, I’ll be ready.”

Since Dennis is on a two-way deal, he is eligible to play in games for the Texas Legends of the G League as well. Mavs guard Jaden Hardy improved tremendously through playing in the G League last season, and we could see a similar result for Dennis if he can dominate the G League as Hardy did.

For all the latest on Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, Dexter Dennis, and the Dallas Mavericks this season, stay tuned.
