Huddersfield Town Defender Reacts To Michael Duff Sacking And Jon Worthington Return

Huddersfield Town defender Brodie Spencer acknowledges that his side need to take “ownership” of the run of form that led to Michael Duff being sacked.

The Terriers parted company with Duff on Sunday following a 1-0 loss at Bristol Rovers, a result that was Town’s fourth defeat in their last five matches, as well as a seventh from the past 11 games.

Recent results have seen Town fall out of the play-off places, with the Terriers currently seventh in the League One table, two points off the top six with 10 games remaining.

Spencer has urged his side to get back on track when they take on third-from-bottom Crawley Town tomorrow afternoon, with the Terriers targeting a first home win since Boxing Day.

Reflecting on Duff’s departure, Spencer said: “I was obviously shocked. I think me and him had quite a good relationship, he was a very nice man. He was always there to help and give me advice, and obviously he’s put the trust in not just me but the rest of the young players, and as a young player that’s what you want.

“I think you’re always surprised when a gaffer gets sacked. It’s not something that you want to happen as a player, and it’s certainly not ideal, but [those are] the things that happen in football, now we just need to put it right.

“When the gaffer gets sacked, it shows something went wrong, so I think it’s down to us now as players to take a bit of ownership of that, and go out and show the fans and everyone else what we are capable of.”

Town have placed Jon Worthington in interim charge for the remainder of the campaign, with the academy manager making the step up for a second time in two seasons.

Spencer, who first played under Worthington in the club’s B team, said: “I think Worthy, no matter what job he has, he’ll always have the same sort of mindset.

“Being here for nearly five years now, I’ve known Worthy from the start, so I know what he demands from the players, and I think the rest of the players know that now as well, obviously with working with him as well last season.

“Worthy is a very straightforward guy, I think all the players know what he wants from us, and it’s just down to us now to go and show that.”
