Goole Vikings make another signing from Castleford Tigers’ centre or back rower

The Goole Vikings have continued their recruitment push with the capture of promising youngster Brad Bullock from the Castleford Tigers. Bullock, just 18 years old, has signed ahead of the Vikings’ upcoming campaign in the third tier (League 1) of the rugby-league pyramid.

A strategic youth move

Goole’s move to recruit Bullock highlights a clear strategy: securing youth talent released or unused by Super League clubs and giving them a route and platform in League 1. Bullock featured heavily for Castleford’s academy and reserve sides, chalking up 10 tries in 16 outings over the past two seasons. However, he never made a first-team appearance for Castleford.

For Goole, this represents an opportunity to develop raw potential under less pressure, while offering Bullock a fresh start and a chance at regular senior rugby. In their statement, the Vikings described Bullock as “highly recommended to the club.”

Why this signing matters

  • Development focus: At 18, Bullock is at an age where senior exposure is crucial. A move to Goole offers meaningful playing time rather than stalling in academy or reserve ranks.
  • Strategic recruitment by Goole: The Vikings are becoming known for snapping up young academy players from higher-tier clubs, aiming to mould them into first-team contributors.
  • Castleford’s perspective: For Castleford, releasing Bullock may reflect the competitive nature of breaking into Super League squads, especially as academy players vie for limited places.
  • Goole’s ambitions: Having entered League 1, the Vikings appear intent not only on consolidation but also on building a squad with future value—players who can be developed, perform, and potentially move on to bigger clubs (or help the Vikings themselves advance).

Challenges and opportunities ahead

While the signing is exciting, the step from academy/reserve rugby to senior competition is significant. Bullock will need to adapt physically, mentally, and tactically. Goole’s coaching staff and environment will play a vital role in his transition. The Vikings will hope that by giving him senior minutes, he can accelerate his development and add impact to their forward pack.

From Bullock’s viewpoint, this is a chance to carve out a senior career path. If he impresses, he could either establish himself as a key player for Goole or attract interest from higher divisions – something the Vikings have hinted at through their recruitment narrative. What it signifies for the club & league

  • For Goole Vikings: It signals ambition. Their recruitment is not just about experienced journeymen but also about investing in youth and growth.
  • For League 1: It shows how clubs in the third tier are active in talent-identification and development, not just survival but progression.
  • For Castleford’s academy system: It shows the competitive nature of the pathway—many talented youngsters may need to look elsewhere for senior opportunities.

Looking ahead

The 2026 season will be one to watch. If Bullock can establish himself at Goole, it may validate the club’s strategy of taking young academy players and giving them a “senior launchpad”. Meanwhile, the Vikings will hope such signings translate into on-field performance and club growth.
