Frank Lampard’s Former Assistant Linked On The Prospect Of Joining Coventry City

Frank Lampard’s former assistant and first team coach Jody Morris is backing the former Chelsea and England star to “do a job” at Coventry City, if given the opportunity to replace sacked manager Mark Robins, and says he would be open to joining him at the CBS Arena.

Morris was Lampard’s number two at Derby County, along with coach Chris Jones who was a first team coach at Pride Park, having previously been first-team fitness coach at Chelsea. It’s understood that the two did most of the coaching work with the Rams, who Lampard led to the Championship play-off final in 2019, where they lost to Aston Villa.

Asked on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan mid-morning show if he thinks Lampard could do a job for Coventry, 45-year-old Morris said: “Yeah, I do. Having worked with him I think he’s a manager or coach that wants to improve players. I think he’s a thinking manager as well and I absolutely think he can go there and do a job for Coventry, for sure.”

Former midfielder Morris, who played 124 league games for Chelsea after coming up through the youth ranks at Stamford Bridge, worked under Lampard as his coach and assistant at Derby and Chelsea before a short-lived spell as Swindon Town manager in 2023.

Asked if the opportunity came along at Coventry and it was to involve him as a number two, would he grab it, Morris replied: “Well yeah, but that’s down to Frank isn’t it, and there would be quite a few things that would need to align.”

Simon Jordan, meanwhile, is unsure whether Lampard if the right man for management, saying: “I’d be interested to see what Frank does because my mind is out on Frank. At one point I thought he was going to be a really good manager and I am not sure anymore.

“I thought the Everton job was a difficult job but I think if he had stayed at Everton that they would have got relegated, so I don’t know what that tells you.”
