Former Sheffield Wednesday defender hits out at Sheffield Wednesday points deductions and shares Owls wish

Former Sheffield Wednesday Akin Famewo is desperate to see his former club prosper again as quickly as possible.

Former Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Akin Famewo has described the points deductions that have been imposed on his former club this season as “very unfair”.

The Owls, who will resume their Championship campaign against Portsmouth at Hillsborough on Saturday, have had a total of 18 points deducted this term. They had 12 points automatically docked for going into administration in October and a further six removed from their tally in December in relation to charges against the club for failing to fulfil its payment obligations earlier in the year.

As a result, Wednesday, 25 games into the season, find themselves rock-bottom of the Championship table on -7, a whopping 32 points from safety, meaning relegation to League One is already effectively sealed.

Famewo was one of 16 members of last season’s first-team squad to leave Hillsborough last summer, leaving the Owls on a free transfer to join Hull City. He was offered a new contract but it quickly became apparent he would not be committing his future to the club, meaning his three-year stint at Hillsborough came to an end.

Famewo, who made 73 appearances during his Wednesday career, has been a bit-part player for Hull so far this season, making just 11 appearances in all competitions. But while he is dreaming of helping the Tigers clinch an unlikely promotion to the Premier League, he has expressed just how much sympathy he has for the Owls and his old teammates.

“I was part of some of that struggle, but, of course, I did leave,” said Famewo, as quoted by the Yorkshire Post. “Speaking to the boys it’s been tough but hopefully they’re on to new and better things now because everything’s going to change.

Famewo: ‘It’s very unfair’

“I think they’ve got new ownership coming in soon, so hopefully things look better. It’s been very unfortunate with the points deduction and stuff. It’s very unfair.

“They don’t deserve that but that’s football sometimes. I just hope to see them back in at least the Championship sometime soon.”

Reflecting on what was a challenging time for everyone at the club when wages were delayed, Famewo added: “It’s something no one ever wants to experience but the players weren’t really too selfish.

“Everyone cared more about the staff and people working at the stadium not getting paid. That was more important for a lot of us.

“It was tough and it wasn’t nice to see or be around but as long as we could support each other and at least be there for each other and the staff, that was really important.

“When I was there, everyone was pretty much focused on, ‘Well, okay, well, what can we do about it? We’re not exactly going to not play. We want to play football so we’ll get to work and hopefully that will resolve itself.’

“It made for some tough times but the boys all got around each other.”
