Exciting Young Castleford Tigers Winger Secures move to Newcastle Thunder

Andy Djeukessi makes senior debut

NEWCASTLE THUNDER have recruited young winger Andy Djeukessi from Castleford Tigers. The 22-year-old was promoted from Castleford’s reserves to make his Super League debut against St Helens in August. Djeukessi also played five times on loan for Workington Town last season.

Djeukessi’s journey to Kingston Park reflects both his personal determination and the pathways available through the English rugby league system. A product of Castleford’s academy and reserves set-up, he earned his Super League debut in August 2025 against St Helens, a memorable milestone despite the team’s heavy defeat. (castlefordtigers.com) Prior to that, he gained valuable competitive experience on loan with Workington Town in League One, where he impressed by scoring six tries in five appearances, including a notable brace against Newcastle during a match where Town ran out 56-0 winners.

Despite showing glimpses of his potential at both Championship and Super League levels, first-team opportunities at Castleford were limited. The Tigers’ depth in wide positions – strengthened further with new signings and established wingers in their squad – meant Djeukessi faced stiff competition for regular game time. The move to Newcastle Thunder, therefore, presents him with an excellent platform to establish himself as a consistent performer in senior rugby.

For Newcastle Thunder, recruiting Djeukessi signals clear intent in their squad building ahead of another competitive Championship campaign. The club have been active in the transfer market, adding several talents as they look to solidify their position in the second tier and challenge on multiple fronts.Head coach Graham Steadman and his coaching team will hope Djeukessi’s raw pace, agility and try-scoring instincts translate into regular contributions on the pitch. At his best, the winger’s speed in open play and willingness to take on defenders could present a real threat to opposition defences.

From the player’s perspective, this move is about development and opportunity. At 22, Djeukessi is entering a crucial phase of his career: one where regular minutes and responsibility can significantly influence his progression. Newcastle Thunder, with their focus on fostering young talent and integrating dynamic players into their system, may provide the ideal environment for him to flourish.

Fans will be eager to see how Djeukessi adapts to life in the Championship. While he may still be relatively slight in build compared to some competitors, his acceleration and work ethic stand out — qualities that have impressed coaches and supporters alike in his initial outings. If he continues to hone his game, the move to Newcastle could prove a pivotal chapter in a promising rugby league career.

As the Thunder prepare for pre-season and the rigours of the 2026 campaign, all eyes will be on how new recruits like Djeukessi integrate with the squad and contribute to a team eager to compete at the highest level of the Championship.
