Bristol City will be hoping to challenge for promotion from the Championship next season.

It was another inconsistent campaign for the Robins last season as they finished 11th in the table, but they lost just two of their final 10 games, offering supporters plenty of hope going into the summer.

Head coach Liam Manning has brought in three new signings so far this summer, with Fally Mayulu, Sinclair Armstrong and Yu Hirakawa arriving at Ashton Gate, while a number of senior players have departed, including Matty James, Andy King and Andreas Weimann.

City have not been afraid to spend on strengthening their forward line, with Armstrong joining from Queens Park Rangers for a fee believed to be just under £2 million, while Mayulu made the move from Rapid Vienna for a reported €3 million (£2.5 million).

Mayulu, who has previously had spells with Wolfsburg and BW Linz, has signed a four-year contract with the Robins, and the club are said to have fought off competition from a number of European sides to land the 22-year-old’s signature.

FLW’s Bristol City fan pundit Tom Sandy believes Mayulu is an exciting signing for the Robins, and he hopes he can replicate the impact of some of the other strikers the club have signed from abroad, such as Jonathan Kodjia and Famara Diedhiou.

“I think the Fally Mayulu signing is fantastic, it’s a really ambitious signing,” Tom said.

“When we’ve gone abroad to sign strikers, such as Jonathan Kodjia and Famara Diedhiou, they tend to come back and help us, the risk has paid off a lot.

“It’s one of those where you have to hope for the same.

“Mayulu is a really unique striker, he’s 6’4”, but he’s really mobile and good with his feet.

“He’s maybe lacking experience, but we’ve got a really young squad at City and I think he’ll fit into that squad and that system really well because he’ll grow with the rest of the team.

“The project that we’re building is looking really, really promising.

“In terms of immediate impact, I think he’ll start the first game of the season.

“If you look at the squads we played in midweek, we had friendlies against Aldershot and Newport and we went with our strong squad in the Aldershot game because it was in front of fans, and that’s the game that Mayulu went into.

“Sinclair Armstrong played in the Newport game, which he scored in, but I think we we will lean towards building the squad more around Mayulu.

“I guess we’ll have to wait and see, I hope he can deliver.

“He was fantastic when he broke through in the second division in Austria, and then he maybe lacked chances last season at Rapid Wien, but hopefully he gets opportunities this season and he can grow and develop.”

Mayulu is a risky signing for the Robins, particularly for a fee of £2.5 million, but he has shown plenty of potential during his time in Austria, and he could prove to be a shrewd addition for the club.

With Tommy Conway looking certain to leave Ashton Gate this summer, City are set to lose one of their main attacking threats, so they will hope that Mayulu can deliver next season.

If Mayulu can have a similar impact to the likes of Kodjia and Diedhiou, then the fee paid for him will look like a bargain, and the Robins could make a significant profit on him in the future.

It remains to be seen how Mayulu will adapt to the Championship, but the fact he was on the radar of sides from across Europe should be encouraging for City supporters, and it is a coup for the club to win the race for his signature.
