The Detroit Pistons cut former Syracuse basketball star Buddy Boeheim on Saturday just two days ahead of the NBA’s Monday deadline for teams to finalize their opening night rosters.
Boeheim had been in Detroit’s preseason training camp on an Exhibit 10 contract. In waiving Boeheim before the start of the regular season, the Pistons avoided a hit to their salary cap.
Boeheim was one of four players waived by Detroit on Saturday. The others were Tosan Evbuomwan, Jontay Porter and Zavier Simpson.
Boeheim spent the 2022-23 season with the Pistons on a two-way deal. He appeared in 10 games with Detroit and 18 with the Pistons’ G-League affiliate, the Motor City Cruise. He averaged 12.1 points and made 37.4% of his 3-point attempts for the Motor City Cruise.
What’s next for Boeheim?
He could sign a two-way deal with Detroit and report to the Motor City Cruise’s training camp, which opens on Oct. 30. Other NBA teams are also free to offer Boeheim a two-way deal. He could also sign a G-League deal with the Cruise or any other G-League deal.
Boeheim played for Syracuse from 2018 to 2022. He finished his career with 1,765 points, putting him 13th on SU’s career scoring chart. As a senior, he averaged 19.2 points per game. He ranks second in school history with 309 made 3-pointers.
