Danny Rohl Speaks On Sheffield Wednesday Summer Exit Rumour Ahead Of The Club’s Final Game Of The Season

Danny Rohl has once again left the question of a potential Sheffield Wednesday summer exit open ahead of the club’s final game of the season.

There is a chance that this Saturday could be the final time that the German takes charge of the Owls, following heavy speculation about his future with the club.

Teams from across Europe, including Leicester City, RB Leipzig and Southampton – the latter two he has worked for previously – have been linked with appointing the 36-year-old this summer.

The worry over whether he would stay on at Hillsborough after this season really came about when Wednesday were narrowly close to receiving a three-window transfer ban for failing to pay their players on time. This period reignited supporters’ protests against the owner, Dejphon Chansiri, but, potentially more worryingly, the saga seemed to take its toll on Rohl.

Danny Rohl addresses questions about his Sheffield Wednesday future

Since then, the German hasn’t taken any position on whether this will be his last season with the club, although he has always maintained that his focus is on the remainder of the campaign. After that, he can think about his future. And it was the same tune in his final pre-match press conference of the season.

Rohl has admitted that he’s informed Chansiri of his decision on his future, and what was slightly worrying from Thursday’s press conference, ahead of game 46 against Watford, was that the Wednesday boss hinted that a potential goodbye, whilst it hasn’t come yet, may well come in time.

“Let’s give us the last game and then, of course, we will speak again, with myself, with the club,” Röhl said, via The Star, when quizzed on what is next for him in his managerial career. “Then let’s see in which direction it goes. I think at the moment what I can say is that it’s open.

“I won’t go too much in details, we had this week, what did this week and I had sponsor dinners. I invited my staff for a dinner this week to say thank you, we had the EFL awards and all these things. Of course, I got many times this question. I must say, of course, I put all these things away and my focus is on the last game, then let’s see what the future brings.

“It is more thank you, it is also thank you for good working together in the last 18 months, but at the moment it is not a goodbye. This is important. Let’s see what the future brings.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s future will be much more uncertain without Danny Rohl

It’s fair to say that without the German the best that Wednesday could have hoped for this season would have been a promotion back to the Championship. They would have almost certainly been back in League One after just one short campaign back in the second tier had the German not worked his magic last term to help the club escape the jaws of relegation.

Even though it’s been a drab end to the season at Hillsborough, with nothing left to play for, it shouldn’t be ignored that Rohl has now progressed the club to being a solid mid-table outfit, who could eventually challenge for the top six.

Games in charge 88
Wins 34
Draws 18
Losses 36
Points per game 1.36

However, if he’s not in the dugout next season, it’s hard to be so positive about Wednesday’s Championship future. That’s not to say that the Owls will be faced with relegation again, but the prospects of them kicking on are less likely without Rohl than they are with Rohl.
