Coventry City Set To Snap Up Versatile 33-Year-Old Attacking Midfielder On A Short-Term Deal

Coventry City are set to sign attacking midfielder Jamie Paterson on a short-term deal, according to reporter Tom Coleman.

Coventry City are looking to charge towards the Championship play-off spots after a surge up the table under Frank Lampard.

The Sky Blues have won five of the last six league games, bouncing back from defeat to Leeds United with a last-gasp win over QPR last time out. Lampard looks to be getting the best out of a talented group at last having endured an underwhelming campaign to date.

The closure of the transfer window means the only way to bolster the ranks is in the free agent market, and City look set to seal a new free transfer deal.

Writing on X, reporter Tom Coleman states that attacking midfielder Jamie Paterson is set to put pen to paper on a deal with Coventry City. The 33-year-old has been without a club since the start of 2025 after his deal with MLS side Charlotte FC expired.

Paterson, who was born in Coventry, has been training with the Sky Blues and is now poised to sign on a deal until the end of the season.

It marks his return to England after only a few months in the United States playing MLS football.

The 33-year-old has spent the vast majority of his career in the Championship, playing a massive 348 games in the division over the years. Across spells with Nottingham Forest, Huddersfield Town (loan), Bristol City, Derby County (loan) and Swansea City, Paterson has chipped in with 55 goals and 52 assists in the league, offering his services as an attacking midfielder, winger and even striker.

A move back to his birthplace of Coventry marks a fitting move for Paterson too as he returns to Championship football with Lampard and co.

Up next for Coventry City

Up next for Coventry City is a trip to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday afternoon. It’s a tough game for the Sky Blues with the Owls also chasing the play-offs, but they’ll feel confident in their current vein of form.

Time will tell whether Paterson is involved. It may come too soon, but he may be able to travel with the squad if the deal has been signed off in time.

Lampard’s side sit 10th in the Championship table as it stands, two points off the play-off spots and only a point behind this weekend’s opponents Wednesday.
