Coventry City are set to sign Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth on loan, reporter Alex Crook has said on X.
Coventry City have emerged as regular promotion contenders in recent seasons, but have found themselves coming up short in the play-offs. Frank Lampard will be out to change that in the 2025/26 campaign with the help of new signings.
The Sky Blues have a host of key assets on the books but with only Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Miguel Angel Brau signed so far, further business is expected over the coming weeks.
Now, it seems a new goalkeeper is set to arrive at the CBS Arena.
Writing on X, reporter Alex Crook has said that Coventry City are set to sign Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Carl Rushworth on loan. The 24-year-old has been given the green light to travel for a medical ahead of the temporary move to the Championship club.
Crook adds that Brighton rejected a £5.5m for Rushworth earlier in the summer, though it is not clarified whether that came from the Sky Blues.
Should Rushworth complete the switch, it will be his third consecutive Championship loan after spells gaining minutes away from parent club Brighton with Swansea City and Hull City.
Smart business amid Oliver Dovin injury
Goalkeeper Oliver Dovin was signed by Coventry City last summer and despite some shaky moments, the consensus is that the promising goalkeeper can be the number one at the CBS Arena for the long run.
Unfortunately, in April, the Swede suffered an ACL injury. Given the lengthy recovery time for such injuries, there is no concrete return date targeted, and he will miss a sizeable chunk of next season.
So, Rushworth will sign to take on the starting berth in Dovin’s absence. It leaves Ben Wilson and Brad Collins as cover once again after they came in over the late stages of last season.
Little news is good Coventry City news?
Coventry City fans likely will have hoped for a bit more movement on the transfer front by now, but in terms of both incomings and outgoings, it has been a fairly quiet summer for the Sky Blues.
More signings will not go amiss, but it can be argued that it is more important that Lampard retains his key assets, more so than signings are required.
The Sky Blues will be eager to retain the services of stars such as Jack Rudoni, Milan van Ewijk, Haji Wright and more. The squad looks strong as it is, and keeping star men is more important than adding more.
That isn’t to say deals don’t lay ahead, but the squad looks to be in a decent place whereas rebuilds for Championship rivals are more necessary.
