Doug King has spoken about the job Frank Lampard has done so far at Coventry City, revealing what has impressed him most about the head coach aside from winning football matches to get the club to the brink of another play-off campaign.
The owner – speaking to CoventryLive at the statue unveiling of FA Cup legends John Sillett and George Curtis – insists he’s “restless” as he continues to drive the club forward to achieve his ambitions, insisting there’s still a lot to do to reach that point.
Asked what’s impressed him most about Lampard and his staff aside from results, the Sky Blues executive chairman King said: “I would say he’s very professional, very focused and he’s really instilled belief in the players in their ability.
“Just hearing the stories about George and John and how they did that, I think it’s really important when you have players that they really believe in themselves and they can go that extra bit.
“He has a very good rapport with the players and I think that has shone out in what has been a historic run for us, you know, nine out of ten wins which is pretty unprecedented. So I am still optimistic we can get ourselves in the play-offs and then once we’re in there, anything is possible for us.”
Asked if he’s pleased with the progress the club has made this season regardless of what happens in the next few games and play-offs, he said: “Yes, but look, there’s still a lot to do at this football club. I feel like we have done a lot already and it feels like we’ve been here forever. But the reality is we haven’t done enough and we still need to make things better. The experience on match days and getting more diverse people from our community to come and watch football is a big deal.
“The core fans here are unbelievable, I mean really unbelievable and I think they have really enjoyed the fact of the engagement we’ve been doing – from what Mark (Robins) did to start it and what we’re now doing to continue it means we’re moving in the right direction.
“So from my viewpoint there’s a lot to do and it always feels like there’s a lot to do for me. I am a bit like that, a bit restless, until we get it spot on. And obviously that’s my goal.”
