Frank Lampard is hoping Victor Torp’s injury is not as bad as it looked when the player was stretchered off in the 20th minute of Coventry City’s match against Portsmouth.
The Danish midfielder was back in the starting line-up in place of Jamie Allen for the CBS Arena clash with relegation battlers Pompey but his game was cut short after he went past an opponent near the halfway line and immediately went down injured, having twisted an ankle.
After being assessed by the club doctor and physio on the pitch, a stretcher was called for and the player carried off, replaced by Ben Sheaf.
It’s not clear whether Torp suffered the damage when turning to get away from his man or whether he was clipped in the process, but the Sky Blues head coach is optimistic that it’s not a really bad injury.
“It’s ankle ligaments and we’re hoping it’s not a terrible injury,” said Lampard, providing an update to CoventryLive after watching his team snatch a stoppage time winner from a stunning volley from super sub Jamie Paterson – the 1-0 victory moving the club back up to sixth place in the play-off positions with five games left to play.
“I don’t know yet but hopefully it’s not as severe as it looked with him being stretchered off. It’s sore and a twist of some nature but hopefully it’s not too bad.
“I don’t know how he did it, whether the twist was in the contact with the Pompey player or the turning motion (as he went past him) and got stuck in the ground. I didn’t see.”
