Birmingham City are top of League One and destined to return to the Championship at the first time of asking.
Birmingham City are well on track for an automatic promotion spot with 11 points separating them from 2nd place. With eight games left of their season, itâs a matter of when, not if, BCFC are champions.
Under Chris Daviesâ management, the team has been impressive, losing only three games so far this campaign and winning four of their last five league matches. The signings made last summer have played a significant role in the Bluesâ success, with the clubâs recruitment excelling the standards of League One.
As City look ahead to life back in the Championship, strengthening the squad will be key to ensuring they can compete at that level and even push for back-to-back promotions. This could mean that some players will need to make way for fresh talent.
Here are three Birmingham City players who need to leave St Andrews this summerâĤ
Dion Sanderson
Sanderson is currently on loan to Championship side Blackburn Rovers after making only two appearances for his parent club before the January transfer window opened.
The 25-year-old has featured nine times for Rovers this season but has been on the bench for the past two games.
It is highly unlikely that Chris Davies sees Sanderson in his plans for next season, but the defenderâs experience and quality make him a viable option for a lot of Championship clubs in the summer, especially if Blackburn choose not to go any further once his loan deal runs out.
Tyler Roberts
The 26-year-old had only signed a four-year contract with Birmingham City in the summer of 2023, but with a wave of new signings through the door, he was sent out on a season-long loan to Northampton Town on deadline day.
BCFC boss Chris Davies has already confirmed that the midfielder is not part of his plans for next season, so after just 19 appearances across all competitions for Birmingham, Roberts will be looking for a new club in the summer.
One goal this season over 22 matches is not eye-catching numbers for potential suitors, but Roberts can still make an impact for a good League One side.
Lukas Jutkiewicz
After eight years, over 300 appearances made and over 60 goals scored for BCFC, it wouldnât be outrageous to call Jutkiewicz a modern-day legend at St Andrews.
However, with attacking options like Lyndon Dykes and Jay Stansfield at their disposal, the 36-year-old has barely featured this season. 11 league appearances all coming from the bench this campaign and no goals to his name realistically spells the end to the strikerâs tenure in Birmingham City.
Jutkiewicz still possesses qualities that either a League One or Two team could utilise, but it wouldnât be a shock to see the veteran hang up the boots after a long career come the end of the season.
