Castleford Tigers Head Coach Ryan Carr Gives Verdict on The Future of Zac Cini $250,000 fullback

Zac Cini: The lowdown on Castleford Tigers' new NRL recruit
ZAC CINI is still very much part of Ryan Carr’s plans at Castleford Tigers, the new head coach has explained. Cini has been linked with a move away from The Jungle, with reports suggesting that the 25-year-old had been offered to rival Super League sides last month.
As the 2026 Super League season approaches, all eyes are on Castleford Tigers’ squad and how new head coach Ryan Carr intends to mould his team following a dramatic off-season overhaul. Central to the conversation — and one of the players linked with uncertainty — is Zac Cini, the Australian outside back who joined the Tigers ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Cini arrived at Castleford after spells in the NRL with the Wests Tigers and a stint in the Parramatta Eels’ NSW Cup side. The 25-year-old showed glimpses of his attacking quality in his debut season for the Tigers, scoring five tries in 22 appearances and demonstrating versatility by featuring both at centre and occasionally at full-back.

However, a pre-season injury disrupted his preparation for 2026 and sparked speculation about his future at The Jungle. Rumours circulated that Cini had been “offered” to rival Super League clubs amid Castleford’s heavy recruitment drive, leading some to question whether he still fits into Carr’s plans.(totalrl.com)

Carr’s Candid Verdict

In response to those transfer whispers, Carr has been clear and emphatic: Cini remains very much a part of Castleford’s plans. In comments to League Express, the Australian coach stressed that while Cini’s pre-season was interrupted due to injury — something beyond the player’s control — he is still regarded as part of the squad moving forward.

“He is one of our players and he is part of our squad,” Carr said, underlining his belief that Cini still has a role to play once fully fit. Carr confirmed that the centre is due back in full training “in two or three weeks” and that his eventual role in the side will be assessed once he’s fully fit and integrated with the rest of the squad.(totalrl.com)

This vote of confidence is significant. Carr is stepping into a challenging job at a club looking to turn around poor recent form — Castleford finished 11th last season before the wholesale changes that have characterised this off-season.

A New Era Under Ryan Carr

To understand Cini’s situation, it helps to appreciate the broader context of Carr’s arrival. Appointed as head coach for 2026 after an impressive coaching résumé in Australia and roles in England, Carr arrives with the mandate to rebuild and reshape the Tigers. His first task has been recruitment; Castleford have brought in double-figure signings from both the NRL and Super League, aiming to address squad weaknesses exposed in last season’s disappointing campaign.

With new faces like Mikaele Ravalawa and Blake Taaffe boosting the backline, Cini faces increased competition for places. But Carr’s comments suggest that rather than being on the chopping block, Cini could benefit from the fresh talent around him — provided he regains full fitness and shows he can adapt to Carr’s system.

Competition and Versatility

One of Cini’s key strengths is his versatility. Comfortable at centre and capable of covering the wing or full-back when needed, he offers tactical flexibility — a trait Carr values highly as he builds a squad capable of adapting to different game plans and challenges across the season.

This adaptability could be crucial. With Carr still determining his best combinations and structures, players who can slot into multiple roles may find themselves ahead in the pecking order. Cini’s ability to cover across the backline could prove an asset, especially in a long season where form and injuries will inevitably fluctuate.

Fit Within Carr’s Vision

Carr’s philosophy appears to centre on effort, adaptability and squad depth. While some external observers questioned whether the many new signings might make it difficult for existing players to secure regular minutes, Carr’s reassurance regarding Cini suggests he values continuity and believes familiar performers can complement new arrivals.

The coach also hinted at openness to further recruitment throughout the season if needed, indicating that final squad roles may not be set in stone even after the campaign starts.

Looking Ahead

For Cini, the coming weeks are crucial. Regaining fitness, building match sharpness, and impressing in training will be essential if he is to capitalise on Carr’s initial backing. If he does, there’s a clear pathway for him to contribute meaningfully in 2026 — whether that’s as a regular starter or as a key rotational option capable of changing games.

Carr’s verdict, then, is cautiously optimistic: Zac Cini’s future at Castleford Tigers is not only intact — it’s hopeful. Provided he returns fit, embraces the challenge of competition, and aligns with the coach’s vision, Cini could yet play a significant role in what promises to be a transformative season at The Jungle.
