Bristol Rovers will be aiming for an immediate promotion back from League Two next season. The Gas were relegated from League One in this past campaign. They slipped out of the third tier after finishing in the bottom four along with Crawley Town, Cambridge United and Shrewsbury Town.
As a result, Inigo Calderon was sacked from his position at the Memorial Ground. Darrell Clarke has since returned to the Pirates for a second spell in the dugout. He has also had spells in the past with the likes of Port Vale, Walsall, Cheltenham Town and Barnsley.
Bristol Rovers ‘table’ Macauley Southam-Hales offer
Bristol Rovers have ‘tabled an offer’ for Macauley Southam-Hales, according to Football League World. They face competition from Wigan Athletic and Lincoln City though meaning they will need to bat away interest from elsewhere in order to secure his services. The full-back is available on a free transfer following his exit from Stockport County and he will be mulling over his next move.
The 29-year-old made the switch to Edgeley Park back in 2020 and went on to make 123 appearances for the Hatters in all competitions, 20 of which came last term, and he chipped in with five goals. The Cardiff-born man helped the North West outfit rise from the National League to League One during his time there. Dave Challinor’s side have opted not to extend his stay though and he will be weighing up his options as a free agent at this moment in time as he seeks to find the right home.
Would Macauley Southam-Hales suit Bristol Rovers?
Bristol Rovers could see Southam-Hales as someone to boost their defensive ranks. If they signed him, he would give them more competition and depth at the back. In addition, he has experience of getting promoted in the Football League.
The Welshman started his career at Cardiff City and rose up through their academy ranks. He was a regular for the Bluebirds at various different youth levels but never played for their first-team. Barry Town snapped him up on a permanent basis in 2017 and he later had spells at Fleetwood Town and Hartlepool United before Stockport came calling.
He was handed a new one-year deal by the Hatters last year and their head coach Challinor said at the time: “He’s been an integral part of the club and team for the last few years and this contract extension shows an appreciation of that and his value within our group. The club have been great in looking after him and giving him the opportunity to get himself back fit, which could be anywhere up to maybe Christmas.
“We all know what Macca adds though, even when he isn’t playing. He’s a great character and we all know that if he can get fit and back to his levels, not only is he a brilliant profile for us in that position but we also feel he has the attributes and quality to play in League One. He will get all of the support he needs and we all hope that we see him back at his best in the not too distant future.”
