Brainer Bonaci, a Red Sox prospect who was suspended for the entire 2024 season after violating the minor league domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy, has been released, according to a major league source.
Bonaci, 22, was amidst a breakout season in 2023 — emerging as a top-10 prospect in the Sox system while hitting .297/354/.464 in High A Greenville and Double A Portland — when he was placed on the suspended list. An investigation ultimately resulted in his placement on the restricted list last October, when he’d been scheduled to take part in the Arizona Fall League, with a subsequent suspension sidelining him this year.
The conclusion of the season marked the end of Bonaci’s suspension. However, the Red Sox elected to release Bonaci rather than add him back to their minor league player pool.
The precise nature of the violation remains unknown.
Preparations for Milton
With Hurricane Milton threatening to batter Florida’s Gulf Coast, the Red Sox put their fall instructional league program on hold on Sunday and had players and staff members either go home or relocate while waiting for the storm to pass. Any decisions about resuming (or canceling) the program will have to wait until after Milton passes . . . Red Sox minor league outfield and baserunning coordinator Corey Wimberly has left the organization to pursue other opportunities, turning down an offer to remain with the Sox. Wimberly had coached in the system since 2017, an eight-season stretch that included managerial stops with the Lowell Spinners, Salem Red Sox, and Portland Sea Dogs before he spent the last three years as a roving instructor. He also served as a fill-in coach on the big league staff.
