Five Facts: Jay Scrubb | NBA.com

Just before the 2023 preseason began, Boston Celtics two-way guard Jay Scrubb tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Scrubb’s injury was disclosed by the Celtics just before Sunday’s season-opening game against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Four days later, he sent a brief message to his social media following informing them of his intention to return to the green as soon as possible.

“I will be back I promise you,” Scrubb posted to X, followed by a shamrock and green heart emoji.

I will be back i promise you 🍀💚

Does Jay Scrubb have a future with the Boston Celtics?

Scrubb’s injury really couldn’t have happened at a worse time. The 23-year-old earned a two-way deal with Boston this summer, after showing out on their summer squad in Las Vegas. He appeared in five summer league games for the Cs, averaging 14.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per contest while shooting 46.3% from the field and 40.0% from beyond the arc.

His energy and hustle off of the bench caught the attention of many, including the team’s front office.

Unfortunately, it’s unclear if he’ll ever actually get to take the floor for the Celtics. The injury will likely keep him sidelined for the entire season. In that case, it doesn’t make much sense for the Cs to continue to keep him in one of their two-way slots.

Even if he’s waived, Scrubb could still wind up back with Boston next season in some capacity. At the very least you’d have to imagine that he’d get another summer league invitation.

From there he’d have the opportunity to prove himself once again and maybe earn another two-way contract.

However, at this point in time, it feels like he may just never wind up playing for Boston. Who knows, things could change and he could wind up back with the team for training camp next fall. If not, then this truly just was an unfortunately timed injury.
