One excellent player in New York City may be playing his final game in 2023–24.
Immanuel Quickley, a guard for the New York Knicks, will no longer be a restricted free agent next summer after failing to reach an agreement with the organization, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The 2020 draft class’s players had until Monday, the day before the start of the next NBA season, to reach extensions with their present teams.
After Monday’s deadline passed without an agreement, Wojnarowski provided a list of more notable NBA players who will now also enter restricted free agency in the summer of 2024.
Among those names, the 24-year-old Quickley is maybe the most fascinating. With 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists in fewer than 30 minutes per game, primarily off the bench for the Knicks, he enjoyed something of a coming-out party the previous season. Quickley has made a name for himself as a deft facilitator who adds significant value with his enthusiasm in the halfcourt, his shooting range from beyond the arc (37.0 percent last season), and his underappreciated defense.
The Knicks may still match any offer made to Quickley in the next summer. But delaying his extension now might prove to be a costly error (or alternatively, it could be an indication that the Knicks really do want to deal Quickley as previously speculated).
