Deebo Samuel is one of the top options on the open market, but if the Pittsburgh Steelers want to land him, what would it cost? He could very well be cut, so the answer might just be cap space, but CBS Sports floated a possible cost for Samuel, and it is a fourth-round pick for the former 2021 All-Pro wide receiver.
“For the fourth-round pick compensation, ESPN surmised that a Day 3 pick may be what Samuel ultimately fetches on the trade market,” Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports wrote. “Getting a selection just outside the top 100 would be a solid return for San Francisco. However, the elephant in the room could be Samuel’s desire to ultimately go to Pittsburgh given the franchise’s current uncertainty at quarterback with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields set to hit free agency.”
Samuel had just over 600 yards last season and dealt with a calf strain for much of the year, limiting his explosiveness. Injuries have racked up over his career, and he is heading into the last year of a massive extension he signed with the 49ers.
The Steelers, if they did trade for him, would likely trade a day-three pick such as that fourth rounder, but it seems likely that Samuel might get cut anyway. That could lead to the Steelers signing him instead without having to give up any draft picks.
