Danny Rohl And Sheffield Wednesday Clash Over Release Clause Price-Tag

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is at loggerheads with the club’s hierarchy over the price of his release clause.

That’s according to a report from Alan Nixon via his Patreon on Sunday, in what is the latest twist in a saga of unrest between Rohl and the Owls board.

Rohl has been linked with a Hillsborough exit in the past, and hinted that he’d turned down the opportunity to take over at Southampton back in December.

It comes a matter of days after the Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri revealed at a fan forum that no discussions between him and Rohl had taken place regarding transfer targets for this month.

Nixon’s report reveals that Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday’s hierarchy are in disagreement over the price of his release clause, as the Owls boss continues to perform an impressive job at Hillsborough under the circumstances he’s encountered.

Nixon states that Rohl was denied the opportunity to take the Southampton job because the Saints were unwilling to pay the full compensation price.

It’s then revealed that Rohl and his agent held a crisis meeting last week to discuss his future, as well as potentially crafting a figure that they believe his release clause should be. This could suggest that his camp feel slightly entrapped by the current price on his head.

However, Chansiri is said to be standing firm on the terms of Rohl’s long-term contract that he signed on 24 May 2024, and as such, it would seem apparent that there will be no revision of his release clause price-tag.

Rohl and Chansiri saga is threatening to turn things toxic at Sheffield Wednesday

As such, the stand-off between Rohl and Chansiri doesn’t appear to have an ending in sight just yet, as the fires continue to be fanned further between the pair.

Rohl revealed back in December that no talks between him and the Wednesday owner had taken place regarding a transfer plan for the January window, with Chansiri then claiming halfway through said window that no progress had been made towards having that critical conversation.

The 35-year-old boss is one of the most widely respected young managers in the game, and is adored by the Wednesday faithful for guiding the club away from the serious threat of relegation last season, before turning them into play-off contenders during the first half of this term.

He’s also made clear on numerous occasions his love for the club, as well as his desire to stay. It was only in December that he said: “The most important key point is that I’m here and I decide to stay here. I feel very well.”

Bristol Ciy (H) Wed, 22 Jan
QPR (A) Sat, 25 Jan
Luton Town (H) Sat, 1 Feb
West Brom (A) Sat, 8 Feb

“This is a fantastic club that has taken me to heart and I feel exactly the same way,” he said after signing his contract extension last year.

“It was never in my mind to be anywhere else but Hillsborough. I feel at home here, the fans have been incredible, they have shown myself and my staff nothing but kindness since the first day.”

However, every manager has their breaking point, and this ongoing dispute with Chansiri can only be pushing him closer towards that.

Therefore, Rohl and Chansiri must find a way to resolve their differences imminently, otherwise they risk seeing a real opportunity to bolster their play-off credentials via the transfer market slip so avoidably through their fingers.

Given Rohl’s popularity among Owls supporters, should this situation continue to go unresolved for much longer, the mood among the fanbase could quickly turn nasty. Something which would be a real shame for the club given how strong of a season their team are having on the pitch.
