Despite another second-round exit in the NBA Playoffs, the Philadelphia 76ers are set up well to avenge their early elimination and get back to the top of the Eastern Conference.
Joel Embiid was on track to repeat as NBA MVP before suffering a knee injury that forced him to miss most of the second half of the 2023-24 NBA season, and didn’t look the same in the postseason.
However, an offseason of rest and recovery could get Embiid back to those same levels though there’s work to be done to the rest of the roster.
Philadelphia is one of the few teams with significant cap space this summer and will be highly engaged in free agency and the trade market.
Tyrese Maxey will get his well-deserved contract extension, but the order of operations is important as the team will likely exhaust its cap space before signing the star point guard.
The team has its own free agents it needs to take care of and it looks like they’re intent on bringing back three of their veterans via Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
“The Sixers would like to re-sign Kelly Oubre Jr., Nicolas Batum and Kyle Lowry,” Pompey reported.
Kelly Oubre Jr. and Kyle Lowry were starters for Philadelphia in the playoffs, while Nicolas Batum played a key role off the bench.
All three should be within budget for the 76ers and could very well be on the roster next season assuming things work out in negotiations.
However, Philadelphia will also be chasing a star player to pair next to Embiid and Maxey so it’ll be interesting to see who they decide to push their chips in for.
