Phillies Get a Major Reminder From Zack Wheeler as Dave Dombrowski Faces a Difficult Offseason Decision

The Philadelphia Phillies have received a powerful reminder of what they need to win, but another difficult offseason decision could determine whether they finally turn their championship ambitions into reality.

Zack Wheeler has been named the National League Players Choice Comeback Player of the Year after returning from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery to deliver another outstanding season. His achievement is a testament to his resilience and a reminder of how valuable elite pitching can be to a championship contender.

But while Wheeler’s comeback gives Philadelphia plenty to celebrate, the organization still has difficult decisions to make elsewhere on its roster.

One of the biggest questions involves closer Jhoan Duran, whose future has become a subject of debate following another disappointing postseason for the Phillies.

Duran was outstanding during the regular season, posting a 1.82 ERA across 61 appearances. Yet his postseason performances have raised questions about whether Philadelphia should keep him for another season or explore trading him while his value remains high.

For president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, these are the kinds of decisions that could define the Phillies’ 2027 campaign.

The organization wants to remain competitive, but it cannot afford to ignore the weaknesses that have repeatedly prevented it from making a deeper postseason run.

ZACK WHEELER JUST GAVE PHILLIES FANS A REASON TO CELEBRATE

Wheeler’s comeback is one of the most encouraging stories to emerge from Philadelphia’s 2026 season.

The veteran right-hander underwent thoracic outlet decompression surgery on September 23, 2025, after a frightening medical episode brought his season to an abrupt end.

His recovery presented significant uncertainty. Returning from such a serious condition is challenging enough, but returning to the level expected of one of baseball’s premier starting pitchers is an entirely different accomplishment.

Wheeler answered those questions emphatically.

According to Phillies Nation’s October 28 report, he recorded a 3.00 ERA in 28 starts during his first season back from surgery. Baseball-Reference credited him with six wins above replacement, underscoring his importance to the team.

His return also coincided with a significant improvement in Philadelphia’s fortunes. The Phillies’ season began turning around after he was activated from the injured list on April 25.

That impact helps explain why his peers recognized him with the Players Choice award.

Wheeler was not simply returning to the mound. He was restoring stability to a rotation that needed an established ace capable of handling high-pressure situations.

His achievement is particularly meaningful because it demonstrates that a serious medical setback does not automatically end a player’s ability to perform at an elite level.

For a franchise with championship ambitions, Wheeler’s return could be just as important in 2027 as it was this season.

WHEELER’S COMEBACK CARRIES A MESSAGE FOR THE ENTIRE ORGANIZATION

There is a reason Wheeler’s achievement deserves more attention than an individual award announcement.

Philadelphia’s roster has experienced significant disappointment over the past several seasons, with postseason failures raising questions about whether the team’s current construction is good enough to win a championship.

Wheeler represents what the organization needs from its most important players: preparation, resilience, consistency, and the ability to deliver when expectations are high.

His recovery also highlights the importance of maintaining a strong pitching foundation.

Teams can spend heavily on offensive talent, but postseason baseball often comes down to whether starting pitchers can control games and whether the bullpen can protect narrow leads.

Wheeler gives Philadelphia a proven starter capable of anchoring its rotation.

However, the Phillies cannot expect him to solve every pitching problem on his own.

They need the rest of the rotation to remain dependable, and they must improve a bullpen that has struggled to deliver consistently in important postseason moments.

Wheeler’s comeback should therefore be viewed as an encouraging foundation rather than a reason to assume the pitching staff is already complete.

If Philadelphia wants to compete seriously in 2027, it must build around its ace while addressing the weaknesses that remain.

JHOAN DURAN’S REGULAR-SEASON SUCCESS MAKES THE DECISION EVEN HARDER

While Wheeler’s future provides optimism, Duran’s situation presents a more complicated question.

The Phillies acquired the hard-throwing closer from the Minnesota Twins at the 2025 trade deadline, and he quickly established himself as one of the team’s most valuable bullpen weapons.

His 1.82 ERA across 61 regular-season appearances in 2026 demonstrates how effective he can be.

Duran has the kind of power arsenal that can overwhelm hitters, and dependable closers are difficult to find.

That is precisely why trading him would be such a significant decision.

Philadelphia already needs to improve its bullpen. Removing its most established late-inning weapon could create another major weakness while forcing Dombrowski to find replacements in an offseason when several roster areas require attention.

Yet Duran’s postseason record has complicated the discussion.

According to the Phillies Nation report, he has not recorded a save attempt in his two postseasons with Philadelphia and has not appeared in a postseason victory for the team.

In the 2026 National League Wild Card series against Atlanta, Duran surrendered a three-run go-ahead home run to Austin Riley in Game 1. He also walked in the tying run during Game 4 of the 2025 NLDS.

Those moments are difficult to ignore, especially for a closer whose primary responsibility is to protect leads in high-pressure situations.

Still, a few difficult postseason appearances should not erase an outstanding regular season.

The more important question is whether Philadelphia can use Duran more effectively in October and surround him with a bullpen capable of handling the innings before he enters the game.

SHOULD THE PHILLIES TRADE DURAN WHILE HIS VALUE IS HIGH?

This is where Dombrowski faces a potentially franchise-defining decision.

Duran is entering his final season of arbitration eligibility and is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2027 campaign, according to the report.

That creates a limited window for Philadelphia to benefit from his services before he reaches the open market.

Elite relievers can attract significant interest from contenders, particularly teams searching for a dependable closer ahead of a postseason run.

If the Phillies believe they cannot agree on an extension or that Duran’s value is unlikely to improve, exploring the trade market could make sense.

The return would be crucial.

Philadelphia needs younger offensive talent and greater flexibility as it evaluates the future of an aging core. A trade that brings back multiple promising young players could help address some of those concerns.

However, the Phillies must avoid trading Duran simply because his postseason performances have disappointed.

A successful trade would need to provide a meaningful long-term benefit rather than merely moving a player after a difficult October.

The organization also needs to consider the cost of replacing him.

If Dombrowski trades Duran and then spends significant money acquiring another closer, Philadelphia could end up with fewer prospects and little improvement in its overall roster.

My view: The Phillies should listen to offers, but they should not actively shop Duran unless a team presents a genuinely attractive package.

His regular-season production is too valuable to surrender for a modest return.

WHY KEEPING DURAN COULD STILL BE THE SMARTER MOVE

There is a strong argument for keeping Duran through the 2027 season.

Philadelphia wants to compete now, and trading an elite closer could make that objective more difficult.

The bullpen already needs additional reliable arms. Removing its strongest option would leave another hole for Dombrowski to fill.

Keeping Duran would allow the Phillies to focus on improving the supporting cast rather than rebuilding the back end of the bullpen.

There is also an opportunity to change how he is used.

Instead of treating Duran exclusively as a traditional ninth-inning closer, manager Don Mattingly could consider deploying him in the seventh or eighth inning when the opposition’s most dangerous hitters are due up.

That approach could allow Philadelphia to use its best reliever in the situations with the greatest potential impact.

It could also help the coaching staff evaluate how Duran responds to different high-pressure assignments before the next postseason.

Of course, using him earlier creates another challenge: someone else must handle the ninth inning.

That is why Philadelphia needs additional bullpen depth regardless of what happens with Duran.

If the Phillies can add reliable late-inning options and improve their overall relief corps, keeping Duran could give them a stronger foundation for another championship push.

WHEELER AND DURAN REPRESENT TWO DIFFERENT OFFSEASON QUESTIONS

The contrast between Wheeler and Duran captures the challenge facing Philadelphia.

Wheeler has demonstrated that an established star can overcome adversity and continue delivering at an elite level.

His comeback is a reminder that the Phillies should not abandon proven talent simply because a player has experienced a difficult period.

Duran’s situation presents a different challenge because his contract timeline, trade value, and postseason struggles must all be considered.

But both cases point toward the same principle: Philadelphia needs to make decisions based on a player’s total value rather than allowing a small number of memorable moments to dictate its strategy.

Wheeler’s recovery deserves recognition because of what he accomplished over an entire season.

Duran’s postseason struggles deserve examination, but they must be weighed against his outstanding regular-season performance.

Dombrowski must evaluate the broader picture in both cases.

The goal should be to create a roster that can perform consistently from April through October, rather than one that looks impressive during the regular season but struggles when the pressure increases.

THE PHILLIES STILL HAVE OTHER PROBLEMS TO SOLVE

Even if Wheeler remains healthy and Duran returns in 2027, Philadelphia cannot assume its problems will disappear.

The offense needs improvement after an underwhelming season, and the club must evaluate several important roster decisions during the offseason.

The Phillies also need better depth throughout the bullpen and a clearer plan for the players surrounding their established stars.

Wheeler’s return gives the rotation a valuable asset, but the team needs enough quality pitching to remain competitive throughout a long season.

Similarly, Duran can anchor the bullpen, but he cannot be expected to compensate for every weakness in the relief corps.

The organization must also decide how aggressively it wants to pursue younger talent and whether some of its established players should be moved to create opportunities for a new generation.

These decisions will determine whether Philadelphia enters 2027 as a genuine championship contender or simply hopes that familiar names produce better results.

FINAL VERDICT: DOMBROWSKI CANNOT AFFORD TO GET THIS OFFSEASON WRONG

Zack Wheeler’s recognition as the National League Players Choice Comeback Player of the Year is a deserved celebration of his resilience and continued excellence.

His 3.00 ERA in 28 starts following major surgery demonstrates how important he remains to Philadelphia’s championship ambitions.

The Phillies should build around that success while addressing the bullpen and offensive problems that contributed to another disappointing postseason.

As for Duran, the decision is more complicated.

Trading him could bring back valuable young talent, but it would also remove the team’s best established bullpen weapon at a time when the relief corps needs help.

Keeping him offers Philadelphia another opportunity to compete in 2027, provided the organization improves the supporting cast and develops a better plan for handling high-pressure postseason innings.
