Angel Reese is giving her critics plenty to talk about, and outspoken sports commentator Jason Whitlock has become part of the conversation after publicly acknowledging just how far the Atlanta Dream star has come.

Whitlock, who previously criticized Reese’s offensive skills, recently revisited those comments as the former LSU standout continued to deliver impressive performances during the WNBA Finals. His remarks have added another layer to the ongoing debate surrounding Reese, her development, and the attention she receives across women’s basketball.

For a player who has faced relentless scrutiny since entering the WNBA, the moment represents something bigger than winning an argument with a media personality. Reese is demonstrating that her game can continue to evolve, even when critics have already decided what they believe she cannot do.

And with Atlanta pushing toward a potential championship, her performances are forcing people to reconsider their expectations.

JASON WHITLOCK ACKNOWLEDGES ANGEL REESE’S REMARKABLE PROGRESS

Whitlock has never been shy about criticizing Reese. He previously described her offensive game in extremely harsh terms, questioning her skill level and ability to contribute effectively as a scorer.

But Reese’s recent performances have made the conversation more complicated.

During a discussion on his podcast, Whitlock acknowledged that he had personally characterized Reese as one of the least skilled offensive players he had watched. He then pointed out that she was now close to potentially winning a WNBA championship with Atlanta.

His comments were striking because they came from someone who had been among Reese’s most outspoken critics.

Whitlock also praised Reese for enduring years of criticism and using it as motivation to improve as a player and teammate.

That acknowledgment does not necessarily mean Whitlock has abandoned every criticism he has made about Reese. However, it shows that her postseason production has challenged the idea that her offensive limitations would prevent her from becoming a major force in the league.

For Reese, the most important response has come on the basketball court.

ANGEL REESE IS MAKING HER POSTSEASON PERFORMANCES COUNT

Reese’s rise with the Atlanta Dream has become one of the most compelling stories of the WNBA postseason.

Her ability to rebound, finish around the basket, and create second-chance opportunities has made her an important part of Atlanta’s championship push.

During the Finals series against the Golden State Valkyries, Reese delivered performances that strengthened her case as one of the league’s most impactful young players.

Following Atlanta’s 97–71 victory in Game 3, the Dream moved ahead 2–1 in the series, putting themselves within two wins of the franchise’s first WNBA championship. Reese’s production had become a major talking point as Atlanta continued its run.

That is precisely why the conversation surrounding her development has changed.

Critics can debate shooting mechanics, offensive versatility, and areas where she still needs improvement. But it becomes increasingly difficult to dismiss a player who is helping her team win at the highest level.

Reese does not need to be perfect in every aspect of the game to be valuable. She needs to continue developing her weaknesses while maximizing the strengths that make her such a difficult opponent.

Her postseason performances suggest she is making meaningful progress.

WHY REESE’S RESPONSE TO CRITICISM MATTERS

Professional athletes regularly face criticism, but the scrutiny surrounding Reese has often extended beyond ordinary basketball analysis.

Her playing style, public comments, personality, and rivalry narrative involving Caitlin Clark have all contributed to the attention surrounding her career.

That environment can create pressure for a young player, particularly when every performance becomes evidence for or against an argument that has followed her since college.

Reese has continued to compete through that scrutiny.

Whitlock’s latest remarks acknowledged that she endured criticism and used it as fuel to become a better player and teammate.

That is an important part of her story.

Development in professional basketball rarely happens overnight. Players must identify weaknesses, make adjustments, and learn how to contribute when their initial strengths are not enough.

Reese’s progress illustrates why evaluating young players requires patience. A player’s game at the beginning of a professional career does not necessarily define what that player will become several seasons later.

Her critics are entitled to maintain their opinions, but they must also be willing to acknowledge improvement when the evidence supports it.

JASON WHITLOCK BRINGS CAITLIN CLARK INTO THE DEBATE

Whitlock’s comments also returned attention to the long-running comparison between Reese and Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark.

The two players entered the WNBA in 2024 after becoming central figures in one of college basketball’s most closely followed rivalries.

Clark was selected first overall, while Reese was drafted seventh by the Chicago Sky. Both arrived with enormous public attention, but their careers have developed along different paths.

Clark’s shooting, playmaking, and ability to generate attention have made her one of the league’s most influential players. Reese has built her reputation through rebounding, interior scoring, and relentless activity around the basket.

Their different strengths make direct comparisons complicated.

Whitlock argued that Reese winning a WNBA championship before Clark would dramatically alter the public debate between the two stars. He described that possibility as a difficult scenario for Clark and her supporters.

But a championship would not automatically settle every argument about which player is better.

Basketball success involves individual production, team performance, leadership, and the ability to contribute to winning. A title would be a major achievement for Reese, but it would not erase Clark’s accomplishments or determine every future comparison.

The more interesting question is whether both players can continue developing into stars who help shape the WNBA’s future.

Their careers do not need to be defined by a rivalry for either player to succeed.

THE ATLANTA DREAM COULD BE REWRITING REESE’S CAREER STORY

Atlanta’s postseason run has given Reese an opportunity to demonstrate what she can contribute when surrounded by a competitive team.

A championship would be a landmark achievement for the franchise and a major moment in Reese’s young career.

It would also strengthen the argument that her impact goes beyond the criticisms that have followed her since entering professional basketball.

However, the Dream still have to finish the job. Taking a series lead is not the same as winning a championship, and opponents can respond with tactical adjustments, improved shooting, and stronger defensive performances.

Reese will need to maintain her production while continuing to work within Atlanta’s system.

Her teammates will also have to contribute consistently if the Dream are to turn their advantage into a title.

The important point is that Reese has helped place Atlanta in a position to compete for the ultimate prize. That achievement deserves recognition regardless of whether the championship ultimately follows.

DOES THIS MEAN REESE’S CRITICS WERE WRONG?

The answer depends on the specific criticism.

If the argument was that Reese could never improve offensively or become a major contributor on a championship-caliber team, her recent performances provide a strong reason to reconsider that position.

If the criticism concerned particular weaknesses in her shooting or offensive technique, those questions can still be evaluated separately.

No player is beyond criticism, and one strong postseason does not mean every concern has disappeared.

But criticism should evolve alongside a player’s performance.

Reese entered the WNBA with areas of her game that needed development. She has since continued working to improve while contributing to a team making a serious postseason push.

Whitlock’s willingness to revisit his previous assessment is significant because sports commentators should be able to acknowledge when a player’s development challenges an earlier opinion.

The real issue is not whether someone must publicly admit defeat. It is whether the discussion accurately reflects what is happening on the court.

At this stage, dismissing Reese’s progress would ignore an important part of her development.

FINAL VERDICT: ANGEL REESE IS MAKING HER GAME THE ANSWER

Jason Whitlock’s comments have reignited the Angel Reese debate, but the most important part of the story is what Reese has accomplished on the court.

She has faced criticism, continued developing her game, and helped Atlanta move closer to a potential WNBA championship.

Whitlock’s acknowledgment of her progress is a reminder that even outspoken critics must reassess their views when a player’s performance changes the conversation.

Reese still has areas to improve, and the championship race is not decided until the final game is won. Nevertheless, her postseason performances have strengthened her reputation as a player capable of making a significant impact.

The comparison with Caitlin Clark will undoubtedly continue attracting attention, but Reese’s career should not depend on defeating another player in a public debate.

Her greatest achievement would be establishing herself as a champion and continuing to develop into one of the WNBA’s most effective stars.
