Key Celtic star who Martin O’Neill loves could quit for Premier League club

Celtic could face another major squad dilemma in 2027, with Cameron Carter-Vickers reportedly open to considering a Premier League opportunity if the right offer arrives.

The American centre-back remains an important figure at Parkhead, and his importance to Martin O’Neill has become even more apparent as Celtic attempt to recover from their disappointing European campaign. Although there is no confirmed Premier League approach, the possibility of Carter-Vickers leaving Scotland’s champions is already a storyline worth watching.

According to the report from Football Insider, Carter-Vickers is happy at Celtic and has not been pushing to leave. However, the opportunity to test himself in England’s top flight could appeal to the defender, potentially creating a difficult decision for both the player and the club next summer.

For Celtic supporters, the concern is straightforward: losing an experienced defender who understands the club could create another problem for a team already under pressure to improve its performances in Europe.

CAMERON CARTER-VICKERS COULD FACE A CAREER-DEFINING DECISION

Carter-Vickers has built a strong reputation since establishing himself at Celtic.

After arriving on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in August 2021, he made the move permanent the following summer. His arrival marked an important turning point in a career that had previously involved several loan spells across English football.

Before finding a home in Glasgow, Carter-Vickers spent time with Sheffield United, Ipswich Town, Swansea City, Stoke City, Luton Town and Bournemouth.

Celtic offered him the opportunity to establish himself within a settled environment, compete for trophies, and become a regular part of a team with significant domestic expectations.

Now approaching his late twenties, the defender could consider whether another challenge would benefit his career.

The Premier League remains one of the most competitive competitions in world football. For a player who has already experienced life in England but has yet to establish himself permanently at that level, the prospect of returning could be attractive.

However, a potential transfer would depend on more than ambition alone. Any interested club would need to make a concrete approach, agree terms with Celtic, and convince Carter-Vickers that the move represented the right next step.

For now, the possibility remains speculative rather than an imminent transfer.

MARTIN O’NEILL KNOWS HOW IMPORTANT CARTER-VICKERS IS

Celtic’s immediate priority is getting Carter-Vickers fit and back into the team.

The defender has reportedly returned to training after an injury, with assistant manager Shaun Maloney suggesting that Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston could be considered for the squad against Hibernian if their recoveries continue positively.

That would be an important development for O’Neill, particularly after Celtic’s 2-1 Europa League defeat to Celta Vigo.

Celtic took the lead through Mika Baur, raising hopes of a positive European result, but two goals from Javi Rodríguez turned the match in Celta’s favour.

The defeat increased pressure on a team that needs to improve its performances in Europe while maintaining its domestic position.

Carter-Vickers’ experience could help address some of those concerns.

A dependable centre-back can provide more than individual tackles and clearances. He helps organize the defensive line, communicate with teammates, manage dangerous situations, and provide stability when opponents apply sustained pressure.

Those qualities become especially important when a team is struggling to defend consistently.

O’Neill will want his experienced defenders available as quickly as possible, but rushing Carter-Vickers back before he is ready would risk creating another problem.

WHY LOSING CARTER-VICKERS WOULD BE A MAJOR BLOW

Celtic have built much of their recent success around a squad capable of dominating domestically while competing in European football.

Replacing a central defender with Carter-Vickers’ experience would not necessarily be straightforward.

A replacement would need to understand Celtic’s expectations, adapt to the team’s defensive system, and deliver consistent performances under pressure.

The club would also need to consider whether a potential signing could improve the defence immediately or would require time to develop.

Those questions become more complicated when a transfer takes place during a period of uncertainty.

Celtic’s European performances have already prompted questions about defensive organization and the team’s ability to handle high-quality opposition. Losing a trusted centre-back could make those concerns harder to resolve.

That does not mean Celtic would be unable to replace him. A well-planned recruitment strategy could identify a suitable successor.

But allowing an experienced defender to leave without a credible replacement would be an unnecessary risk, particularly if the club wants to improve its European competitiveness.

Celtic should begin preparing for the possibility of Carter-Vickers leaving without assuming that his departure is inevitable.

That means assessing potential replacements, reviewing the depth available at centre-back, and ensuring that the club is not forced into a rushed decision if interest becomes concrete.

CARTER-VICKERS’ CONTRACT GIVES CELTIC AN IMPORTANT ADVANTAGE

One important factor in this situation is Carter-Vickers’ contract.

According to the supplied report, the defender is under contract with Celtic until 2029 after signing an extension in January 2024.

That gives the Scottish champions a degree of protection if a Premier League club decides to pursue him.

Unlike a player approaching the end of his contract, Carter-Vickers would not be able to leave simply by waiting for his deal to expire next summer.

Any permanent transfer would normally require an agreement between the clubs, unless a specific contractual provision or other applicable rule changed the situation.

This position gives Celtic time to assess their options and negotiate from a stronger position should serious interest emerge.

The club would still need to consider the player’s ambitions and whether keeping him represents the best outcome for everyone involved.

If Carter-Vickers wants to remain at Celtic, his contract provides stability. If a major Premier League opportunity emerges, however, the club may need to weigh the financial return against the sporting cost of losing an important player.

The key will be avoiding a situation in which speculation distracts from the team’s immediate objectives.

THE PREMIER LEAGUE APPEAL IS UNDERSTANDABLE

It is easy for supporters to interpret transfer speculation as a sign that a player is unhappy.

But the report specifically states that Carter-Vickers is happy at Celtic and has not been actively pushing for a departure.

That distinction matters.

A footballer can value his current club while remaining interested in a new professional challenge. The Premier League offers exposure, intense competition, and the opportunity to test oneself against some of the world’s best players.

Carter-Vickers has already spent several years moving between English clubs on loan. A permanent Premier League opportunity could offer a different experience from those earlier spells, particularly if he were recruited by a club that views him as an important part of its long-term plans.

However, not every Premier League move guarantees more playing time or greater success.

The defender would need to consider the proposed club’s style, competition for places, managerial plans, and the likelihood of regular first-team football.

Remaining at Celtic could also be attractive, especially if he continues to play a significant role and the club makes progress in Europe.

The decision, if an offer arrives, would involve balancing ambition, stability, playing opportunities, and personal circumstances.

CELTIC MUST NOT ALLOW TRANSFER SPECULATION TO DISTRACT FROM HIBS

Before Celtic can worry about next summer, O’Neill must concentrate on the challenges immediately in front of him.

The trip to Hibernian represents an opportunity to respond to the European disappointment and maintain momentum in the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic entered the matchweek with 24 points from nine league games, according to the supplied report, while Hibernian were struggling near the bottom of the table.

Those standings make Celtic favourites on paper, but the recent head-to-head record provides a reminder that the Edinburgh side can be dangerous.

Hibs had beaten Celtic twice in the previous ten meetings listed in the report, including a 2-1 victory in February 2026.

Celtic won the most recent meeting in Edinburgh, taking a 2-1 victory in May.

O’Neill will therefore need his team to approach the contest with concentration rather than assuming that the league positions will determine the outcome.

If Carter-Vickers is available, his presence could provide a boost. If he is not ready, Celtic will need other defenders to demonstrate that the team can remain organized without him.

Either way, the immediate priority is a convincing response on the pitch.

SHOULD CELTIC SELL CARTER-VICKERS IF A PREMIER LEAGUE OFFER ARRIVES?

This is the question Celtic’s leadership may eventually have to answer.

The club should not automatically reject an offer simply because Carter-Vickers is an important player. Every transfer decision depends on the financial terms, the player’s wishes, the availability of replacements, and the team’s wider strategy.

However, Celtic should also avoid treating a transfer fee as the only measure of success.

Selling an experienced defender could generate money, but that financial return would need to be balanced against the cost of finding a replacement and the potential effect on the team’s performances.

If a Premier League club offered a substantial fee and Celtic had already identified a suitable successor, a sale might be worth considering.

If the offer arrived late in the transfer window without enough time to recruit properly, keeping Carter-Vickers could be the more sensible decision.

The defender’s contract until 2029 means Celtic do not need to panic or accept the first proposal that arrives.

My view is that Celtic should be prepared to listen to serious offers, but only if the club can protect its defensive strength.

The worst outcome would be losing Carter-Vickers without a clear plan for how to replace his experience and leadership.

FINAL VERDICT: CELTIC SHOULD PREPARE NOW, NOT PANIC

Cameron Carter-Vickers’ potential Premier League future is a storyline Celtic supporters should monitor, but it is not yet a confirmed transfer battle.

The report indicates that the defender remains happy at Parkhead and is not pushing to leave. No current Premier League approach has been identified, and January is considered an unlikely departure point.

Nevertheless, the possibility of a move next summer creates an important planning question for Celtic.

O’Neill needs Carter-Vickers available and contributing as the team attempts to improve its defensive performances. At the same time, the club must ensure that its long-term recruitment plans do not depend entirely on one player remaining indefinitely.
