Sheffield Wednesday Star Josh Windass Shares Verdict On Controversial Harry Kane Penalty Decision

West Brom urged to avoid deal for Sheffield Wednesday's Josh Windass

Josh Windass has weighed in after England reached the Euro 2024 final.

Windass has had an enjoyable summer so far after signing a new contract at Sheffield Wednesday.

The midfielder is currently in pre-season training at St George’s Park with the rest of the squad, but has been sure to make time for England’s European campaign.

Gareth Southgate progressed to his second consecutive Euro final last night, as the Three Lions claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Netherlands.

After falling behind early on, Harry Kane was then awarded a very controversial penalty that he tucked away.

Fans and pundits were left baffled when referee Felix Zwayer was sent to the VAR monitor and subsequently pointed to the spot, with Denzel Dumfries being judged to have made contact with Kane as he took a shot inside the box.

The England striker went onto score his third of the tournament, before Ollie Watkins scored only his fourth international goal in the 90th minute to take the national team to Sunday’s final against Spain.

Josh Windass weighs in on Netherlands v England decision

England fans were left delighted by the team’s late win, but there was an understandable debate over whether England should have been given the penalty.

After the game, Virgil van Dijk said: “I think it says it all that the referee went in quickly after the game. It is difficult to accept this.”

Windass has now issued his verdict on the incident and seems to have disagreed with a majority of the English population.

In response to Jamie Carragher’s claim that it wasn’t a penalty, Windass wrote on X: “If a striker does that to a centre back clearing the ball. It’s a foul 100 out of 100 times without fail.”

A baffling decision but one the Three Lions should take

England have been very poor throughout this tournament, but there is no denying that they deserved to win last night – even if they did slow down in the second half.

The penalty was extremely controversial and very soft. If it had been given as a penalty initially and he had decided not to overturn it then that would have been more understandable, because you can probably claim it wasn’t clear and obvious.

However, the same applies to the fact that he didn’t give it. It’s baffling how the referee believes the error he made there was clear and obvious, when there is so much debate over the decision.

England shouldn’t complain though. They have had so many historic decisions go against them and what they have needed so far at the Euros is a bit of luck, and luck can be what wins you the tournament.
