PHILLIES’ PLAYOFF GAMBLE COULD BACKFIRE: ONE PITCHING MISTAKE AGAINST THE BRAVES COULD END THEIR SEASON

The Philadelphia Phillies are heading into the postseason with a dangerous question hanging over their championship hopes: Can their pitching staff survive October if the bullpen struggles to get the game to closer Jhoan Duran?

Philadelphia secured its postseason berth on the final day of the regular season, but the late-season struggles have raised concerns about the team’s ability to compete against the best teams in baseball. Now, with the Atlanta Braves standing in their way, the Phillies must make every pitching decision count.

The challenge is particularly complicated because Philadelphia’s rotation has been affected by recent workload, leaving the coaching staff with difficult decisions about who should start, who should provide relief and how aggressively the team should manage its pitching resources.

Jesús Luzardo, Cristopher Sánchez, Aaron Nola, Andrew Painter and Jhoan Duran could all play important roles in determining Philadelphia’s postseason fate.

But there is one major concern: The Phillies cannot expect Duran to rescue them every night if the pitchers ahead of him cannot keep the game under control.

THE PHILLIES FACE A HIGH-STAKES PITCHING DECISION

The Phillies enter the postseason against a familiar division rival in Atlanta.

The matchup carries significant historical weight. Philadelphia defeated Atlanta in the National League Division Series in both 2022 and 2023, establishing a reputation for performing well against the Braves when the postseason pressure intensifies.

However, past success offers no guarantee of another victory.

The Phillies’ late-season form has created uncertainty, and their pitching decisions could determine whether they advance or suffer another disappointing early elimination.

With the Wild Card Series being a best-of-three contest, there is little room for error. One poor start, one costly bullpen collapse or one poorly timed pitching change could dramatically alter the series.

Unlike a longer postseason matchup, a three-game series offers very little time to recover from mistakes.

That makes Philadelphia’s pitching strategy just as important as its offensive performance.

JESÚS LUZARDO COULD BE THE KEY TO GAME 1

Jesús Luzardo is expected to start Game 1, but his role presents an interesting challenge.

According to the original report, Luzardo had recently returned from the injured list and made a relief appearance during the regular-season finale.

That limited preparation raises questions about how deep he can pitch into the game.

Rather than expecting Luzardo to provide a traditional six- or seven-inning start, Philadelphia could use him as an opener or give him a relatively short outing before turning to its other available arms.

This strategy could help the Phillies manage his workload while taking advantage of his ability to challenge Atlanta’s hitters early.

However, it also creates a potentially dangerous situation.

If Luzardo exits after only a few innings, Philadelphia must have enough reliable relievers available to handle the middle innings before handing the ball to Duran.

And that is where the real concern begins.

An opener strategy only works when the pitchers coming out of the bullpen can execute their assignments.

If the Phillies cannot get reliable innings from their relief corps, even an effective start from Luzardo could be wasted.

ANDREW PAINTER COULD RECEIVE A CRUCIAL OPPORTUNITY

Andrew Painter is another name to watch in Philadelphia’s Game 1 pitching plan.

The young pitcher reportedly last appeared on September 24 and has experience working out of the bullpen during the regular season.

That versatility could become valuable in a postseason environment where traditional starting roles sometimes disappear.

Painter could provide multiple innings after Luzardo exits, helping the Phillies bridge the gap between their opener and the late-inning relievers.

However, asking a young pitcher to handle a high-pressure postseason situation is not without risk.

Atlanta’s lineup has the experience to recognize mistakes, punish poorly located pitches and capitalize on pitchers who fall behind in the count.

The Phillies must therefore be careful not to place too much responsibility on Painter simply because the rotation is stretched.

His role should be based on preparation, effectiveness and matchup considerations rather than desperation.

If Painter can deliver composed, competitive innings, he could become one of Philadelphia’s most important contributors in the series.

If he struggles, the Phillies could be forced to turn to other pitchers earlier than planned.

CRISTOPHER SÁNCHEZ PROVIDES THE PHILLIES WITH A MAJOR ADVANTAGE

While Game 1 presents several questions, Game 2 offers Philadelphia a more familiar and potentially reassuring option.

Cristopher Sánchez is expected to start on normal rest, giving the Phillies an opportunity to deploy one of their most dependable starting pitchers in a conventional role.

The original report highlighted Sánchez’s postseason numbers through four starts:

  • 2.79 ERA
  • 2.95 FIP
  • 1.09 WHIP
  • 3.80 strikeout-to-walk ratio

Those figures suggest a pitcher who has demonstrated an ability to limit damage, manage opposing hitters and avoid giving away too many free opportunities.

His postseason experience is particularly valuable because the Braves are familiar with Philadelphia’s personnel and approach.

Sánchez’s ability to command his pitches and generate weak contact could help prevent Atlanta from building early momentum.

Still, the Phillies should avoid assuming that one strong starting pitcher will solve every problem.

Even an excellent performance from Sánchez requires defensive support and enough offensive production to turn a competitive game into a victory.

If Philadelphia wants to advance, Sánchez must give the team a chance to win—not carry the entire pitching staff on his shoulders.

THE BULLPEN IS THE BIGGEST THREAT TO PHILADELPHIA’S PLAYOFF HOPES

For all the attention surrounding the starting rotation, the bullpen could ultimately decide this series.

The Phillies have an elite late-inning weapon in Jhoan Duran, whose ability to overpower hitters makes him a valuable asset when Philadelphia reaches the ninth inning with a lead.

But getting the ball to Duran is another matter entirely.

A closer cannot protect a lead if the game falls apart in the fifth, sixth or seventh inning.

That is why Philadelphia’s middle relief options deserve as much attention as its starting pitchers.

If Luzardo is limited to a short outing, the Phillies will need dependable relief work to keep Atlanta’s offense under control.

If Painter enters the game, the coaching staff must determine whether he can handle the specific matchups presented by the Braves.

And if those options fail, Philadelphia could find itself using pitchers in unfamiliar roles or asking its best relievers to record more outs than anticipated.

That creates a chain reaction.

A difficult Game 1 could weaken the bullpen for Game 2. An extended relief appearance could affect availability for a potential deciding game. And an overworked bullpen could become an even greater liability if Philadelphia advances to the next round.

The Phillies need more than one dominant reliever.

They need a functioning bullpen.

WHY JHOAN DURAN CANNOT BE THE ENTIRE PLAN

Duran’s presence gives Philadelphia a legitimate advantage in close games, but the organization must resist the temptation to treat him as a universal solution.

Even the best closers have limitations.

They generally enter games in specific situations, and their effectiveness depends partly on the pitchers who handle the innings before them.

If Philadelphia repeatedly asks Duran to rescue games after the bullpen has already surrendered the lead, his value becomes more difficult to maximize.

The Phillies should instead focus on creating situations in which Duran can enter with a manageable workload, favorable circumstances and a realistic opportunity to secure the victory.

That means identifying reliable setup options and being willing to make difficult decisions before a game spirals out of control.

It also means recognizing when a starter has reached his limit.

Waiting too long to remove a struggling pitcher can put unnecessary pressure on the entire relief corps.

In October, timing matters.

AARON NOLA AND ZACK WHEELER PRESENT DIFFERENT QUESTIONS

Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler also complicate Philadelphia’s pitching decisions.

According to the original report, Nola made a start on September 26 on two days’ rest as the Phillies attempted to secure their postseason position.

That workload makes his potential availability and role an important consideration.

Nola has extensive major league starting experience, but he has never pitched out of the major league bullpen, according to the report.

Moving him into relief during a short postseason series would therefore represent a significant adjustment.

It could work under the right circumstances, but it would require careful preparation and a clear understanding of what the coaching staff expects from him.

Wheeler presents a different issue.

Because he started the regular-season finale, the original report suggested that he was unlikely to be available for Game 1.

That could limit Philadelphia’s flexibility at the very moment it needs dependable innings.

The organization must balance its desire to win immediately against the risk of exhausting its pitching resources before the series is decided.

Using every available pitcher simply because the situation feels urgent can create bigger problems later.

THE BRAVES WILL TRY TO EXPLOIT PHILADELPHIA’S UNCERTAINTY

Atlanta will undoubtedly recognize the importance of Philadelphia’s pitching decisions.

If the Braves discover that Luzardo is on a short leash, their hitters may attempt to extend at-bats, work deeper counts and force the Phillies to reach into the bullpen early.

They could also look for opportunities to pressure younger or less experienced relievers.

That does not mean Atlanta will automatically succeed.

But the Braves have every incentive to make Philadelphia use as many pitchers as possible.

The Phillies, meanwhile, must avoid allowing the matchup to dictate every decision.

Their pitchers need to attack the strike zone, avoid unnecessary walks and prevent the Braves from creating scoring opportunities without putting the ball in play.

Philadelphia’s defense will also need to remain sharp.

In a short postseason series, a single defensive mistake can extend an inning, increase a pitcher’s workload and change the complexion of an entire game.

The Phillies cannot afford to give Atlanta extra opportunities.

PHILADELPHIA’S OFFENSE MUST HELP THE PITCHING STAFF

There is another part of this equation that deserves attention: the offense.

Pitching decisions become much easier when a team scores early and creates a comfortable lead.

Conversely, when the lineup struggles to produce runs, every pitching change becomes more consequential.

Philadelphia cannot expect its pitchers to deliver perfect performances throughout the series.

Even an outstanding starting pitcher will occasionally surrender a home run or allow a rally to develop.

The lineup must provide enough support to absorb those moments.

That means the Phillies’ veteran hitters need to deliver in important situations, especially with runners in scoring position.

If the offense fails to capitalize on scoring opportunities, Philadelphia could find itself asking its bullpen to protect narrow leads or keep games tied for extended periods.

That is a difficult way to win a championship.

The Phillies’ postseason success will depend on both sides of the game working together. Their pitchers need to limit Atlanta’s scoring, and their hitters need to give the pitching staff some breathing room.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE SERIES GOES TO GAME 3?

A deciding Game 3 would present Philadelphia with its most difficult pitching challenge.

By that point, the coaching staff would have to evaluate which pitchers remain available, who has already handled a heavy workload and whether any starter could contribute in relief.

The answers would depend on what happened during the first two games.

If Luzardo and Sánchez provide deep outings, Philadelphia could enter a deciding game with more bullpen flexibility.

If Game 1 becomes a bullpen marathon, however, the Phillies could find themselves short on reliable options.

Painter’s workload, Nola’s availability and Duran’s usage would all become important considerations.

This is why Philadelphia must plan beyond the opening game.

The objective should not simply be to win Game 1 at any cost.

It should be to win the series without leaving the pitching staff completely depleted.

That requires discipline, preparation and a willingness to make adjustments when the original plan stops working.

MY PREDICTION: THE BULLPEN WILL DETERMINE THE SERIES

The Phillies have enough starting-pitching talent to compete with Atlanta.

Sánchez offers stability in Game 2, while Luzardo’s potential effectiveness gives Philadelphia an opportunity to establish control in the opener. Painter could provide useful flexibility, and Duran gives the team a dangerous option when a game reaches the late innings with a lead.

But those strengths come with significant questions.

How long can Luzardo pitch? Can Painter handle the pressure? Will the middle relievers consistently get outs? And can Philadelphia avoid overusing Duran before the ninth inning?

Those questions could determine the series.

My prediction is that Philadelphia’s best chance of advancing depends on Luzardo delivering an effective opening stint, Sánchez providing a strong Game 2 performance and the bullpen avoiding the costly mistakes that can derail a postseason run.

If those things happen, the Phillies have a realistic opportunity to defeat Atlanta.

If the bullpen struggles again, even excellent performances from the starting rotation might not be enough.

FINAL VERDICT: THE PHILLIES CANNOT AFFORD ANOTHER PITCHING COLLAPSE

The Philadelphia Phillies enter the postseason with championship ambitions, but their pitching plan against the Atlanta Braves is far from straightforward.

Luzardo’s workload creates uncertainty. Painter could be asked to handle a significant assignment. Sánchez provides a more established option for Game 2, while Nola and Wheeler present additional questions about availability and usage.

Duran remains the team’s most important late-inning weapon, but he cannot solve every problem by himself.

Philadelphia needs its entire pitching staff to contribute.

It also needs its offense to produce enough runs to prevent every game from becoming a high-pressure exercise in bullpen management.

The margin for error is small, and Atlanta will be eager to take advantage of any weakness.

The Phillies have the talent to advance, but talent alone will not win this series. Execution, smart pitching decisions and timely hitting must carry them through.

If Philadelphia gets those ingredients right, another memorable October run remains possible.

If not, the team’s championship hopes could disappear before the postseason truly gets started.
