PHILLIES FACE MANY PRESSING OFFSEASON QUESTIONS: TREA TURNER’S 2027 POSITION TOPS THE LIST

The Philadelphia Phillies entered the 2026 season expecting their veteran core to make another serious push toward the World Series. Instead, another early postseason exit has forced the organization into an offseason filled with difficult questions.

The Phillies were eliminated by the Atlanta Braves in the National League Wild Card Series, continuing a frustrating trend of postseason disappointment. Now, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski and the rest of the organization must decide whether the answer is a few targeted additions—or a more significant reshaping of the roster.

Among the biggest questions is one that would have seemed almost unthinkable when Philadelphia signed Trea Turner to a massive long-term contract: Where should Turner play in 2027?

That decision could have major consequences for the Phillies’ defense, lineup construction and long-term roster planning.

TREA TURNER’S POSITION COULD BECOME THE BIGGEST OFFSEASON STORY

Turner has spent the majority of his career at shortstop, and Philadelphia originally envisioned him as a cornerstone of the infield for years to come.

But the 2026 season created legitimate concerns.

Turner finished the regular season with a .242 batting average, 19 home runs, 58 RBIs and a .675 OPS, according to Baseball-Reference. His overall production was well below his career standards.

The offensive struggles alone would make Turner an important offseason discussion. His defense adds another layer.

Philadelphia has already experimented with defensive changes elsewhere on the diamond after acquiring Luis Arraez. During that reshuffling, Turner remained at shortstop while other players moved around him.

Now, however, the Phillies have to consider whether keeping Turner at shortstop is still the best option for the team.

Recent reporting has raised the possibility of Turner eventually moving to the outfield, a decision that would represent one of the most dramatic changes Philadelphia could make without trading one of its biggest stars.

THE PHILLIES HAVE A MUCH BIGGER PROBLEM THAN ONE PLAYER

It would be easy to blame Turner for the Phillies’ disappointing season, but that would miss the bigger picture.

Philadelphia’s issues extend across the roster.

The team has an aging core, significant financial commitments and several important free agents. Alec Bohm, Luis Arraez, Edmundo Sosa, José Alvarado and others are among the players entering free agency, giving the front office several decisions to make.

The Phillies also need to improve a bullpen that struggled badly down the stretch.

That means Dombrowski cannot simply move Turner and assume the roster is fixed.

The organization needs to determine which problems are temporary and which ones represent structural weaknesses.

WHY MOVING TURNER COULD MAKE SENSE

There is a strong argument for considering a position change.

Turner is still an elite athlete, and his speed could potentially become an asset in the outfield. Moving him away from shortstop could also reduce some of the defensive pressure that comes with playing one of baseball’s most demanding positions.

Most importantly, it could allow Philadelphia to build a more stable defensive alignment around its emerging players.

The Phillies have top prospect Aidan Miller in their organizational plans, although his 2026 season was significantly affected by a back injury. His potential arrival creates another important piece in the infield puzzle.

If Miller eventually takes over at third base, Philadelphia could have greater flexibility in determining how the rest of the infield is constructed.

That makes Turner’s position more than a defensive question.

It is a roster domino.

BUT MOVING TURNER IS NOT A SIMPLE DECISION

There is an obvious counterargument.

Turner signed a 11-year, $300 million contract that runs through 2033. He is not a short-term player Philadelphia can simply replace if the experiment doesn’t work.

The Phillies therefore have to maximize his value.

Moving him could help defensively, but it could also create a new problem if Turner is uncomfortable with the change or struggles to adapt to a new position.

There is also the question of whether Philadelphia would be moving him away from shortstop because of one disappointing season.

That would be dangerous.

A veteran with Turner’s track record deserves an opportunity to rebound.

The smarter approach may be to evaluate whether his defensive decline is permanent before making a drastic decision.

THE OFFENSE NEEDS MORE THAN A TURNER FIX

Even if Turner returns to his All-Star-caliber form, Philadelphia still needs more offensive balance.

The 2026 Phillies showed that relying heavily on the same veteran core has limitations. Their lineup can still produce tremendous power, but age, defensive concerns and inconsistency became increasingly difficult to ignore. Baseball America specifically identified the aging lineup and poor defense as major concerns following the postseason elimination.

That is why the Phillies should resist the temptation to make one move and declare the offseason successful.

They need athleticism.

They need defensive versatility.

They need younger contributors.

And they need reliable pitching depth.

The goal should not simply be to recreate the 2026 roster with a few substitutions.

THE BULLPEN MUST ALSO BE A PRIORITY

Philadelphia’s bullpen is another major concern.

The team entered the offseason needing to address relief pitching after a disappointing performance, particularly late in the season. ESPN identified bullpen improvement as one of Philadelphia’s biggest offseason priorities following the Wild Card loss.

This is where the Phillies could potentially make a more straightforward upgrade.

Unlike moving Turner, improving the bullpen does not require disrupting the organization’s long-term core.

A couple of dependable late-inning arms could dramatically change Philadelphia’s postseason outlook.

The Phillies learned a painful lesson in 2026: having a talented rotation and dangerous lineup does not guarantee October success if the bullpen cannot protect leads.

DON MATTINGLY’S STATUS ADDS ANOTHER LAYER OF UNCERTAINTY

The managerial position is another major question.

Don Mattingly finished the season as the Phillies’ interim manager, meaning Philadelphia has to decide whether he should receive the permanent job or whether Dombrowski should look elsewhere.

That decision matters because the organization needs consistency while simultaneously considering significant roster changes.

A new manager could bring a different philosophy.

Keeping Mattingly would provide continuity.

Neither option guarantees success.

The Phillies have already reportedly been connected to managerial possibilities including Alex Cora, although recent reports indicate that pursuit has not produced the desired result.

PHILADELPHIA CANNOT AFFORD ANOTHER COSMETIC OFFSEASON

This may be the most important point of the entire discussion.

The Phillies have reached the postseason repeatedly, but simply making October is no longer enough.

The organization built this roster to win a championship.

Instead, the 2026 season ended with another early playoff exit.

That creates pressure on Dombrowski to determine whether the roster needs meaningful change rather than another round of minor adjustments.

Philadelphia still has major stars in Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Zack Wheeler and Turner.

But the supporting structure around those stars needs to evolve.

The Phillies cannot expect an aging core to remain exactly the same forever.

WHAT SHOULD THE PHILLIES DO WITH TREA TURNER?

My prediction is that Philadelphia will seriously consider moving Turner off shortstop but will not rush into the decision.

That distinction is important.

The Phillies have too much money and too many years invested in Turner to make a reactionary decision based on one disappointing season.

The front office should enter spring training with multiple defensive possibilities.

If Turner can demonstrate improved defense and offensive consistency, keeping him at shortstop remains viable.

If the Phillies believe another alignment gives them a better chance to contend, moving Turner to the outfield could become the boldest and most logical adjustment.

Either way, the organization needs to communicate the reasoning clearly.

THE 2027 PHILLIES COULD LOOK VERY DIFFERENT

Philadelphia’s 2027 roster could feature several noticeable changes.

Bohm’s future is uncertain. Multiple free agents could depart. The bullpen needs attention. Young players could receive greater opportunities. And Turner’s position could become one of the biggest storylines of spring training.

The good news for Phillies fans is that this is not a hopeless roster.

There is still significant talent.

The challenge is maximizing it.

The 2026 postseason failure should not automatically trigger panic, but it should trigger honesty.

The Phillies have to ask whether their current construction gives them the best possible chance to win the World Series—or whether they have become too predictable.

FINAL VERDICT: THE TURNER DECISION COULD DEFINE THE OFFSEASON

Trea Turner’s position may ultimately become the symbol of the Phillies’ offseason.

If Philadelphia keeps him at shortstop, the organization will be betting on a rebound and hoping better health, preparation and surrounding talent restore the former All-Star’s impact.

If the Phillies move him, they will be acknowledging that the roster needs a different defensive structure.

Either way, the decision carries enormous implications.

The Phillies do not need to tear everything down.

They need to evolve.

And after another postseason disappointment, the biggest mistake Philadelphia could make would be pretending that the 2027 team only needs a few minor repairs.

Turner’s future position is one question.

The larger question is whether the Phillies are willing to make the difficult changes necessary to finally turn a talented regular-season roster into a championship team.

SOURCES AND CONTEXT

Current reporting indicates that Philadelphia faces several offseason decisions involving the roster, managerial position, bullpen and the future defensive alignment around Turner.
