MICHIGAN FOOTBALL QUARTERBACK RUMOR DEBUNKED: KYLE WHITTINGHAM HAS NOT ANNOUNCED TOMMY CARR AS STARTER VS. PENN STATE

A viral claim circulating about Michigan football has created plenty of conversation around the Wolverines’ quarterback situation — but there is one major problem with it.

Kyle Whittingham has not officially announced that freshman quarterback Tommy Carr will start against Penn State.

The claim suggests that Whittingham has already selected Carr to replace Bryce Underwood and even attributes a quote to the Michigan head coach about Carr providing the team with “a glimmer of light” during recent practices.

As of today, however, there is no credible confirmation from Michigan that Carr has been named the starter for the Oct. 17 matchup with Penn State.

That distinction matters because Michigan enters its bye week at 3-2 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten play, with significant questions surrounding its offense and quarterback position.

THE TOMMY CARR ANNOUNCEMENT IS NOT REAL

The biggest takeaway for Michigan fans is simple: do not treat the viral post as an official quarterback announcement.

Michigan’s official coaching staff information still lists Kyle Whittingham as head coach, while the program’s official roster confirms Tommy Carr is a freshman quarterback from Saline, Michigan.

Carr is certainly a player worth watching.

He made his collegiate debut against UTEP on Sept. 19 and completed both of his passing attempts for 23 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown pass to Salesi Moa. He also rushed twice for 18 yards.

But those flashes should not be confused with an official decision to hand him the starting job.

WHY THE RUMOR SOUNDS BELIEVABLE

The rumor gained traction because the timing makes the story plausible.

Michigan just suffered consecutive Big Ten losses to Iowa and Minnesota. The Wolverines’ latest setback was particularly damaging, with Minnesota winning 20-14 on Oct. 3.

Underwood struggled badly in that game, completing 10 of 21 passes for 101 yards with two interceptions while Michigan’s offense repeatedly struggled to generate momentum.

That naturally led to questions about whether Whittingham should consider Carr.

In fact, the question has already been put directly to the Michigan coach.

After the Minnesota loss, Whittingham was asked whether he considered replacing Underwood with Carr during the game. His answer was that Michigan believed Underwood gave the team the best chance to win as the game progressed.

That is very different from announcing Carr as the starter.

WHITTINGHAM HAS LEFT THE DOOR OPEN

At the same time, it would be a mistake to assume the quarterback competition is permanently closed.

Whittingham has previously indicated that positions are not necessarily “set in concrete,” while saying Underwood was Michigan’s quarterback at that point.

That language is important.

Michigan is entering a bye week, giving the coaching staff additional time to evaluate its offense, personnel and practice performance before facing Penn State.

Whittingham also acknowledged following the Minnesota loss that difficult decisions could be necessary.

The coach described fixing Michigan’s current problems as perhaps the biggest challenge he has faced during his more than four decades in coaching.

So while Carr has not been officially named the starter, the possibility of a quarterback evaluation is absolutely legitimate.

TOMMY CARR HAS GIVEN MICHIGAN SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

Carr’s appeal goes beyond simply being the backup quarterback.

The freshman entered Michigan with an intriguing family connection to the program. His father, Jason Carr, played quarterback for Michigan from 1991 through 1995, while his grandfather Lloyd Carr later became the Wolverines’ head coach. Another grandfather, Tom Curtis, is also a Michigan Football Hall of Fame figure.

But his name alone will not win him the job.

What matters is what Carr shows the coaching staff.

His limited game action against UTEP demonstrated some of the athletic ability Michigan knew it had recruited. He threw a touchdown on his first two career pass attempts and added 18 rushing yards.

The sample remains extremely small, though.

There is a major difference between producing against UTEP in limited snaps and being asked to start against a Big Ten opponent such as Penn State.

MICHIGAN’S REAL PROBLEM GOES BEYOND QUARTERBACK

It would also be too simplistic to blame Michigan’s struggles entirely on Underwood.

The Wolverines have bigger offensive problems.

Michigan is averaging only 315.8 yards per game and 23 points per game, while its passing and rushing production has both ranked poorly nationally. The team also entered the bye week with a minus-four turnover margin and significant penalty issues.

Protection has also been an issue.

Whittingham specifically said Michigan needed to determine whether sacks were caused by coverage, protection breakdowns or the quarterback holding the ball too long.

That means changing quarterbacks would not automatically solve everything.

If the offensive line continues struggling, the running game remains inconsistent and receivers fail to create separation, Carr could face many of the same problems Underwood has encountered.

THE PENN STATE GAME COULD DEFINE MICHIGAN’S SEASON

The timing makes this quarterback story even more important.

Michigan and Penn State are both 3-2 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten play entering their respective Week 6 situations. Michigan will have the bye before hosting the Nittany Lions on Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m.

That makes the matchup something of a reset opportunity.

A victory would put Michigan back on a more respectable trajectory.

A third consecutive conference loss, however, would create considerably more pressure on Whittingham and his staff.

The Wolverines were expected to compete at a much higher level during Whittingham’s first season in Ann Arbor. Instead, the team has entered October searching for consistency and an offensive identity.

WHAT HAPPENS IF CARR REALLY DOES START?

If Whittingham ultimately decides to turn to Carr, it would be one of the most consequential decisions of Michigan’s season.

The upside is obvious.

A young quarterback could provide energy, mobility and a different offensive rhythm. Sometimes a struggling offense simply needs a new voice and a different style of play.

Carr could also give Michigan valuable experience for the future.

But the downside is equally clear.

Penn State will not be an easy environment for a true freshman quarterback making his first career start. Michigan would be asking Carr to handle Big Ten pressure at a moment when the entire offense is already searching for answers.

That is why Whittingham has to separate fan frustration from football evaluation.

WHY MICHIGAN FANS SHOULD WAIT FOR THE REAL ANNOUNCEMENT

The current quarterback debate is understandable, but fans should be careful about turning speculation into fact.

There is a significant difference between:

“Michigan should start Tommy Carr.”

and

“Kyle Whittingham has announced Tommy Carr as the starter.”

The first is an opinion.

The second is news — and currently, there is no credible evidence that the second statement is true.

Carr may ultimately win the job during the bye-week evaluation. Underwood may remain the starter. Michigan could even use the remaining practices to develop a larger rotation or package for Carr.

Those are legitimate possibilities.

But until Michigan or Whittingham officially announces a change, the responsible conclusion is that Bryce Underwood remains the quarterback whose status is being evaluated, not a player who has already been replaced.

THE BYE WEEK COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING

The next several days could be crucial.

Michigan has time to examine film, evaluate practice performance and determine whether the offense needs a personnel change.

That makes the bye week potentially more important than another ordinary week of preparation.

If Carr performs exceptionally well in practice, the coaching staff could have a difficult decision to make.

If Underwood responds strongly and shows better command of the offense, Whittingham may decide that sticking with his sophomore quarterback is the best path.

Either way, the decision should come from the coaching staff — not from an unverified social-media post.

FINAL VERDICT: THE RUMOR IS AHEAD OF THE FACTS

The Tommy Carr storyline is worth following, especially after Michigan’s offensive struggles and Underwood’s difficult performance against Minnesota.

But Kyle Whittingham has not officially announced that Carr will start against Penn State.

What is confirmed is that Michigan is 3-2, has lost two straight Big Ten games, faces Penn State on Oct. 17 and has legitimate questions to answer during the bye week.

Carr is a promising freshman who has already shown flashes in limited action.

Underwood is a highly regarded young quarterback who is now under significant pressure to improve.

And Whittingham is facing one of the biggest challenges of his coaching career.

That combination makes the quarterback competition one of the most important Michigan storylines to watch heading into Penn State.

For now, though, the viral “Tommy Carr announced as the starter” claim should be treated as false — not as breaking news.
