Phillies Encouraged to Part Ways With $172 Million Pitcher Following Continued Struggles

The Philadelphia Phillies entered the season with championship expectations, but the club’s ambitions have once again placed significant pressure on every member of the roster. When a team is built to contend for a World Series, underperformance from an important player can quickly become a major talking point. That is particularly true when the player carries a substantial contract.

The Phillies have now been encouraged to consider moving on from one of their high-priced pitchers following a difficult stretch of performances. The pitcher, who is tied to a $172 million contract, has struggled to consistently deliver the level of production expected from such a significant investment.

For Philadelphia, the situation presents a difficult decision. The organization must determine whether the recent struggles represent a temporary downturn or evidence that the pitcher is no longer the reliable presence the club needs in its rotation.

Expectations Come With a Big Contract

A $172 million commitment inevitably creates enormous expectations. Teams do not make that kind of financial investment simply to add depth. They expect a pitcher to take the ball regularly, work deep into games, limit damaging innings and provide stability when the pressure is at its highest.

That standard is even higher in Philadelphia, where the Phillies have established themselves as serious postseason contenders. With a talented roster and an aggressive approach to competing for championships, the club cannot afford to carry significant weaknesses for an extended period.

The problem is that moving on from a highly paid player is rarely straightforward.

A contract of this size can make a trade complicated, particularly if the player’s recent performances have reduced his market value. Other teams may be reluctant to assume the full financial commitment unless Philadelphia is willing to absorb part of the remaining salary or accept a less attractive return.

That leaves the Phillies facing a balancing act between short-term competitiveness and long-term roster construction.

Recent Struggles Raise Questions

The biggest concern is not necessarily one bad outing or one disappointing month. Baseball is a sport in which even elite pitchers experience difficult stretches. The concern becomes more serious when inconsistent performances begin to appear repeatedly.

For a pitcher expected to anchor or significantly contribute to a championship-caliber rotation, command issues, diminished effectiveness and an inability to consistently neutralize opposing hitters can quickly become problematic.

Every poor start also creates additional pressure.

Instead of simply evaluating the pitcher based on one game, opposing teams begin to attack weaknesses they have identified. Hitters become more aggressive when they know a pitcher is struggling to locate his pitches, while Philadelphia’s bullpen can be placed under additional strain when the starter exits early.

Over the course of a long season, those problems can have a significant impact.

The Phillies therefore have to determine whether the pitcher can correct the issues or whether the organization would be better served reallocating the roster spot and financial resources elsewhere.

Why Moving on Could Make Sense

Those advocating for a change are likely looking at the bigger picture.

Philadelphia’s window to compete for championships is valuable. The club has invested heavily in building a roster capable of winning now, meaning there is little room for sentimental decisions when a player is not producing at the expected level.

If the Phillies believe another pitcher could provide greater reliability, exploring the trade market could make sense.

A trade could potentially allow Philadelphia to acquire a younger player, replenish organizational depth or address another area of weakness. Even if the club cannot receive a major return, creating flexibility could be valuable.

There is also the possibility that Philadelphia could use a combination of prospects and salary considerations to restructure the roster.

However, trading a pitcher simply because he has struggled would carry its own risks.

The Case for Patience

The argument against making a quick decision is equally strong.

Pitching is notoriously difficult to predict. A veteran with an established track record can suddenly rediscover his command, velocity or confidence. A few adjustments to mechanics or pitch selection can completely change a pitcher’s results.

The Phillies also understand the importance of having experienced arms available during a postseason run.

Replacing a proven major-league pitcher is not as simple as finding another name on the free-agent market. Quality starting pitching is expensive and difficult to acquire. If Philadelphia trades away the pitcher and fails to find an adequate replacement, the move could create a larger problem than the one it was intended to solve.

There is also the question of trade value.

If the pitcher’s stock is currently low, Philadelphia may receive far less in return than it would have expected before the struggles began. In that situation, keeping him and giving him an opportunity to rebound could ultimately be the smarter financial decision.

Philadelphia Must Look Beyond the Contract

One of the most important factors in the decision should be separating the contract from the player’s actual value.

The $172 million figure is already committed. Philadelphia cannot recover money simply because the pitcher is struggling. The organization must instead ask what gives the team the best chance of winning going forward.

That could mean keeping him.

It could also mean trading him.

The key is determining whether his future production is likely to justify his remaining salary and roster position.

If the Phillies believe the pitcher can return to his previous level, patience may be justified. If internal evaluations suggest that his decline is more permanent, the club may need to be aggressive in finding an alternative.

A Difficult Decision for the Phillies

The Phillies have never been afraid of making significant moves when they believe those moves can improve their championship chances. But this situation requires careful evaluation because the financial commitment is substantial.

The front office will have to consider performance, health, age, contract structure, trade value and the availability of potential replacements.

Most importantly, the Phillies must determine what gives them the strongest pitching staff when the postseason arrives.

If the struggling pitcher can regain his effectiveness, keeping him could turn into a major advantage. A healthy and confident veteran recovering from a difficult period could become an important part of a championship rotation.

But if the struggles continue, Philadelphia may eventually have no choice but to explore other options.

The Bottom Line

The calls for the Phillies to move on from their $172 million pitcher reflect the high standards surrounding a team with World Series aspirations. Big contracts create big expectations, and sustained struggles naturally lead to questions about whether a player still fits into the organization’s plans.

Philadelphia should not make a decision based solely on frustration. At the same time, the club cannot ignore prolonged warning signs simply because of the size of the contract.

The smartest approach may be to evaluate the pitcher carefully over the coming weeks while quietly monitoring the trade market. If his performance improves, the Phillies could retain an experienced arm and potentially benefit from a rebound. If the struggles persist, the organization should be prepared to explore a trade.

Ultimately, the Phillies’ priority must remain the same: building the strongest possible roster for a championship run. If moving on from a highly paid pitcher gives them a better chance to achieve that goal, difficult decisions may become necessary.

For now, the debate is likely to continue. But one thing is clear: when a $172 million pitcher struggles to meet expectations, the Phillies cannot afford to ignore the conversation.
