MICHIGAN STATE SHOCKER: ALESSIO MILIVOJEVIC AND KENNY SOARES SPEAK OUT AFTER BRUTAL 31–3 LOSS TO WISCONSIN

Michigan State’s difficult start to Big Ten play took another painful turn Saturday as the Spartans were overwhelmed by Wisconsin in a 31–3 defeat at Camp Randall Stadium.

The loss dropped Michigan State to 2–3 overall and 0–2 in Big Ten play, while Wisconsin improved to 4–1 and 2–0 in conference action. The Spartans have now lost three consecutive games, creating legitimate questions about how quickly first-year head coach Pat Fitzgerald can turn the season around.

After the game, Michigan State quarterback Alessio Milivojevic and edge rusher Kenny Soares Jr. addressed the media. Neither attempted to hide the frustration surrounding the performance.

Their comments revealed a team that understands its problems but now faces the much harder task of correcting them.

MILIVOJEVIC ADMITS THE FRUSTRATION IS REAL

Milivojevic delivered one of the clearest messages following the defeat, acknowledging that the frustration inside the locker room is significant.

The quarterback emphasized that Michigan State still has more than half of its season remaining and that the players need to look inward rather than search for excuses.

That mentality could become important for the Spartans.

At 2–3, the season is certainly not over. But the margin for error has become much smaller, particularly after starting Big Ten play with consecutive losses.

Milivojevic also stressed the need for Michigan State to sustain drives.

That was a major issue against Wisconsin.

The Spartans struggled to consistently move the football and repeatedly failed to turn promising opportunities into points. Milivojevic finished 15-of-32 for 103 yards without a touchdown or interception, while Michigan State managed only three points.

MICHIGAN STATE COULD NOT SUSTAIN OFFENSIVE MOMENTUM

The biggest concern may not simply be the final score.

It was how difficult it became for Michigan State to maintain offensive momentum.

The Spartans were unable to reach the end zone and finished only 1-of-6 on fourth-down attempts, leaving several opportunities on the field.

Against a Wisconsin team that was already controlling the game, those missed opportunities were costly.

Milivojevic’s point about sustaining drives is therefore particularly important. When an offense repeatedly leaves the defense on the field, the pressure eventually becomes difficult to overcome.

That is exactly what happened in Madison.

WISCONSIN CONTROLLED THE GAME FROM THE START

Wisconsin established control early and never surrendered it.

The Badgers scored twice during the opening quarter, both through quarterback Colton Joseph’s connection with Jacob Harris. Wisconsin added a field goal before halftime to take a commanding 17–0 advantage.

Michigan State finally got on the scoreboard through Liam Boyd’s 31-yard field goal just before halftime, but the Spartans entered the locker room still trailing by 14.

The second half only made matters worse.

Joseph broke loose for a 47-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter before connecting with Malachi Coleman for a 46-yard touchdown in the fourth. Wisconsin ultimately walked away with a 31–3 victory.

KENNY SOARES OWNS A COSTLY MISSED OPPORTUNITY

For Soares, the defeat was particularly personal.

The Michigan State edge rusher acknowledged a play that slipped through his hands, saying he needed to make that opportunity count not only for himself but also for his teammates.

That type of accountability matters after a loss of this magnitude.

Football games can turn on only a handful of plays, and Michigan State did not make enough of those plays against Wisconsin.

Soares’ comments suggest that the players understand the difference between simply competing and actually finishing opportunities.

Against Big Ten opponents, that distinction can determine the entire season.

THIRD DOWN BECAME A MAJOR PROBLEM

One of the most troubling elements of Michigan State’s performance was its inability to get Wisconsin off the field.

According to postgame analysis, Wisconsin converted six of its first seven third-down opportunities, including several manageable situations that extended drives.

That allowed the Badgers to control possession and repeatedly put pressure on the Michigan State defense.

The Spartans’ defense was already dealing with personnel challenges, but third-down execution made the situation considerably worse.

If Michigan State wants to recover from its current slide, improving on third down has to be near the top of the priority list.

INJURIES HAVE MADE THE CHALLENGE EVEN HARDER

Milivojevic also addressed injuries, making it clear that losing teammates is difficult but that opportunities can emerge for younger players and backups.

Michigan State entered the Wisconsin matchup without important contributors, including Cam Edwards and Jordan Hall.

That created additional pressure on both sides of the ball.

Still, injuries cannot become the only explanation for a 28-point defeat.

The players who step into larger roles now have to prove they can handle those opportunities.

For a team trying to rebuild momentum in the Big Ten, depth is not a luxury. It is a necessity.

MILIVOJEVIC’S MESSAGE ABOUT STARTING FASTER MATTERS

Another revealing comment from Milivojevic was his acknowledgement that Michigan State needs to start games faster.

That may be one of the most important lessons from the Wisconsin defeat.

The Spartans cannot repeatedly fall behind against quality conference opponents and expect to manufacture comebacks every week.

Early deficits force the offense into uncomfortable situations, while the defense spends additional time on the field.

Against Wisconsin, that formula quickly became disastrous.

Michigan State needs more efficient opening drives, better third-down execution and greater consistency before the pressure becomes overwhelming.

WHAT THIS LOSS MEANS FOR PAT FITZGERALD

This defeat also increases the spotlight on first-year head coach Pat Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald was hired to establish a new standard at Michigan State, but the Spartans are now 0–2 in Big Ten play and have lost three straight games.

That does not mean his tenure should be judged after five games.

It does mean, however, that the remainder of the schedule becomes increasingly important.

The question is no longer whether Michigan State can have a perfect season.

That opportunity is gone.

The question is whether Fitzgerald can use the adversity to establish a team capable of competing consistently in the Big Ten.

THE GOOD NEWS: THE SEASON IS NOT OVER

Despite the disappointment, Milivojevic is correct about one thing: there is still plenty of football remaining.

Michigan State is 2–3, meaning a strong second half could dramatically change the perception surrounding the program.

The Spartans’ next opportunity comes at home against Illinois next Saturday, giving them an immediate chance to respond in front of their own supporters.

That game could become much more significant than it appeared on the schedule before the Wisconsin defeat.

A victory would not erase the problems exposed at Camp Randall, but it could provide evidence that the Spartans are capable of responding to adversity.

WHAT MICHIGAN STATE MUST FIX NEXT

The solution cannot be one player.

Michigan State needs improvement across several areas.

The offense has to sustain drives and create more scoring opportunities. The defense must become more reliable on third down. The special teams and fourth-down decisions also need to produce better results.

Most importantly, the Spartans need to stop allowing individual mistakes to snowball into entire stretches of ineffective football.

Milivojevic and Soares accepting responsibility is a positive first step.

But words after a loss only matter if they lead to different performances the following Saturday.

FINAL VERDICT

Michigan State’s 31–3 loss to Wisconsin was more than another defeat.

It was a warning sign.

The Spartans are now 0–2 in Big Ten play, have lost three consecutive games and have been unable to find enough offensive consistency to keep pace with conference opponents.

Yet there is still an opportunity to change the narrative.

Milivojevic’s message about looking inward and sustaining drives, combined with Soares’ willingness to own his missed opportunity, suggests the locker room understands that improvement has to begin with the players.

Now comes the difficult part.

They have to prove it.

Michigan State’s response against Illinois will tell us far more about this team’s character than anything said during Saturday’s postgame press conference.
