After the Spurs signed Chris Paul in free agency and acquired Harrison Barnes via trade without giving up any players in return, they have now made an unsurrising move: renouncing the rights to players taking up cap space. So far, those include Dominick Barlow, David Duke Jr, Sanrdo Mamukelashvili and Cedi Osman. They have also waived Charles Bassey.
The San Antonio Spurs have renounced the free agent rights for the following players:
Even though Barlow and Osman are currently unrestricted free agents, the Spurs still owned their bird rights. Meanwhile, Mamu was a restricted free agent, and David Duke Jr. was on a two-way contract. Bassey was on a non-guaranteed contract. The good news is it looks like Julian Champagnie, who is also non-guaranteed, is safe as all the moves required to make the Barnes trade happen have been made.
Of course, none of this means none of these players can’t be re-signed. As noted above, they would reportedly like to re-sign Bassey, the Spurs would still able to use the Room Exception (worth about $8 million), the Second Room Exception and minimum contracts to sign players, which they could use on anyone listed above.
