Castleford Tigers assistant Scott Murrell gives insight into Ryan Carr’s coaching style of play

Castleford Tigers appoint ex-Hull KR star Scott Murrell to coaching staff - The Mirror

SCOTT MURRELL has hailed new Castleford Tigers head coach Ryan Carr as his new style of play has been ‘bought into’ by everyone at the club.

Carr has signed a three-year deal at the OneBore Stadium as the Tigers head into a new era following a dismal number of years.

Castleford finished second bottom of Super League in 2025, saved only by the financial wreck of the Salford Red Devils.

However, heading into 2026, the Tigers have recruited almost a whole new side with Carr at the helm – and it’s safe to say that Murrell is impressed.

“Pre-season has been really good, he (Ryan Carr) is challenging us every day,” Murrell said after Castleford’s 26-10 win over Leeds Rhinos at the weekend.

“I knew Carry when he coached Featherstone, because I was at Halifax, so I was playing against his side.

“I had a few conversations with him, so to work with him now is really good.

Everything’s new, it’s his first head coach role at the top level, so he’s come in with the systems he wants to play, got that into the players and we’ve all bought into it.”

Murrell isn’t pulling any punches though, as nothing really matters until the season starts.

“Pre-season’s been really good, but as we know, the real test is when the games come.

“We’re looking forward to the season, that (against Leeds) was our first pre-season friendly and we had a few first-teamers involved matched with a few kids.

“We’re looking forward now to Saints next week.”
