The New York Knicks are currently the Eastern Conference betting favorite to make the NBA Finals. However, an inconsistent regular season currently sees them currently in the second seed behind the Detroit Pistons. Most pundits expect the Knicks to stand pat and trust their core roster. However, the bench can easily see improvements via a trade before the deadline in less than a month.
The Athletic reports that the Knicks remain very interested in New Orleans Pelicans point guard Jose Alvarado. James Edward III stated the following:
“New York, per league sources, has shown interest in the feisty guard. Alvarado really applies pressure on ballhandlers night in and night out. He’s one of those infectious players, similar to Hart, whose plays radiate throughout the rest of the group.”
Another strong reserve guard could be ideal for the Knicks to have a couple of options heading into the postseason. Last season’s team struggled from playing too many minutes in the regular season and having a short rotation in playoff games. Alvarado would help the already improved depth as a very good defender and an energetic offensive option.
Would Knicks Have Better Title Chances?
The Knicks have reached a great position of having everything riding on the postseason. Most teams are fighting to become contenders, but the top handful of teams often get that extra pressure. Everyone now expects New York to finish with a high seed and look good throughout the entire regular season as contenders.
However, the entire organization will be judged on how they perform in the playoffs. Knicks fans will accept nothing less than the NBA Finals due to the rest of the East being quite weak. The team must make the Finals, and the expectation will then become more dependent on winning their first NBA Championship since the early 1970s.
Alvarado looked impressive in his first postseason series against the Phoenix Suns back in 2022. New Orleans dealing with multiple injuries caused Alvarado to gain playing time, and he delivered effectively. New York would not desire too many minutes out of Alvarado, but players with his toughness usually make a difference off the bench.
Could Knicks Easily Acquire Jose Alvarado?
One of the main reasons that the Knicks remain a rumored suitor for Alvarado is due to how easy it would be to acquire him. New Orleans is currently in a rebuilding process and could likely accept future draft assets or a young player with some upside in exchange for their reserve guard.
Most playoff teams could put together a realistic offer for Alvarado since his services are no longer as valued on the Pelicans. A terrible start makes it hard for New Orleans to get out of the late play-in seed race as their ceiling.
The team is trying to win since they don’t own their current draft pick, but the talent is not strong enough to make up for the flaws. Alvarado and other role players getting them some assets for the next few seasons could be beneficial to playoff teams. The Knicks will have a fair chance to add Alvarado and gain another respected player on the roster.
