Coventry City are preparing for another season of Championship football after coming up short in the play-offs.
The Sky Blues lost to Sunderland in the semi-finals in heartbreaking circumstances with a last-gasp Dan Ballard header condemning them to defeat across two legs.
The focus now switches to resting up and recharging before an important summer. Transfer business will be key in helping Frank Lampard and co make strides forward when next season comes around.
However, while Coventry City look to freshen up the ranks, it is said that one player who will be heading for pastures new is Fabio Tavares.
Coventry Live state 24-year-old attacker will be let go by the Sky Blues when his deal expires and loan club Burton Albion are set to sign him. The option of a permanent transfer was included in the winter deal and the Brewers are indeed set to keep him.
Coventry City would be entitled to a nominal compensation fee if they wished, but they are expected to sanction the move for nothing to allow Tavares to swiftly start his post-Sky Blues career this summer.
The right time to leave Coventry City
Tavares has been on the books at Coventry City since the winter of 2021, signing as a youngster from Rochdale.
It was hoped that the Portuguese forward could develop into a future first-team player with the Sky Blues but ultimately, he hasn’t been able to make the grade at Championship level. Opportunities have arisen, but Tavares hasn’t shown enough to warrant a stay.
With a move expected, he departs with four goals and two assists to his name in 30 appearances for the club. 22 of those outings came in the Championship though only one was this season.
At Burton Albion, Tavares has two goals and an assist in 10 games.
Who else could leave the club?
Looking at the Coventry City squad, there are a handful of other players who could head for pastures new this summer.
The deals of Jamie Allen and Jamie Paterson expire, as do those of Jack Burroughs, Ryan Howley and Cian Tyler.
Perhaps the doors will open for some to move on depending on incomings too. Frank Lampard will be eager to make his mark on the squad and that will bring casualties, though time will tell just how the dust settles after play-off heartbreak.
