West Brom Keen On Deal For Out-Of-Contract 21-Year-Old Defender

West Brom are on the lookout for a new manager as they enter a crucial summer window. WBA parted ways with Tony Mowbray and Shilen Patel will be eager to get the next appointment spot on.

The Baggies fell away from the play-off fight after Carlos Corberan’s exit and following Mowbray’s sacking, they ended the season under former midfielder James Morrison.

However, despite the pressing matter of landing a new boss, it seems the hierarchy at The Hawthorns are not letting it slow down their identification of potential summer targets.

According to a report from Africa Foot, West Brom are among the clubs keen on a deal for centre-back Gora Diouf, who is out of contract with Swiss side FC Sion this summer. The expectation is that the Senegalese talent will leave the club for nothing, drawing the interest of clubs from overseas.

It is claimed that WBA are strong admirers of Diouf but face competition from Turkish duo Trabzonspor and Samsunspor in pursuit of his signature.

Diouf signed a three-year deal with Sion in the summer of 2022, when he signed from Lusitana in his native.

More on Diouf

As touched on before, rumoured West Brom target Diouf moved to Europe with Sion in the summer of 2022. However, he has only really made a name for himself in the first-team picture over the past year.

He found sporadic opportunities in the two seasons prior while playing regularly for their U21s but has become a regular over the past year.

A left-footed centre-back capable of covering at left-back, Diouf has made 24 appearances this season. In the process, he chipped in with two goals, thee last of which came in a 2-1 win over FC Lugano in March.

New centre-back a must for West Brom

West Brom arguably already have their left-footed centre-back for the long-term in the form of Norwegian star Torbjorn Heggem, but adding depth and competition to the ranks in the form of Diouf should not be frowned upon.

It seems likely that at least two centre-backs are signed by WBA this summer. Mason Holgate’s loan is ending and Semi Ajayi seems destined to deepart.

That would leave just Heggem, Caleb Taylor and Kyle Bartley, whose performances have dipped over recent months, as natural options at the heart of defence.

New cover is a must, and the Baggies could find just that in a promising free agent-to-be in Diouf.
