Tom Wagner Reveals Birmingham City To Break Transfer Record In The Summer

Birmingham’s attention has already turned away from the 2024/25 season and toward the summer transfer market.

Birmingham City lost to Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy final after what was a disappointing showing on Sunday.

While their first piece of silverware since 2011 would have been nice, however, it was, in reality, not the priority for the Blues.

Instead, the main focus was escaping League One, which they did last week, being crowned champions following Wrexham’s draw with Wigan Athletic.

Birmingham can break a League One record in the final month of the season, but even without it, fans should still be buzzing with what their club has achieved and start looking forward to the summer.

Tom Wagner says Birmingham City can break transfer record

The Championship is, of course, a very different ball game to League One, which the Midlands outfit dominated without really getting out of second gear.

Jay Stansfield has come in for criticism after he became the most expensive signing in third-tier history last summer.

And it now looks as though Birmingham are set to spend big once more in the coming weeks.

Blues owner Tom Wagner has been discussing the upcoming window this week and, when doing so, was asked if they will break their transfer record, promising to do so if they have the headroom.

Speaking to Birmingham Live, he said: “If we have the headroom, we’ll do it.

“We’ll see. I think at the end of the day, a lot of it is thinking about what do we spend this year versus what we spend in future years? Where’s the talent? What’s the price? Where’s the value?

“All of those are questions that can’t be answered until the window opens, but you know we do have high ambitions and at the same time we will be seeking great value. I think we did an exceptional job with that last summer and I think we’ll do a very good job with it this summer.”

Birmingham City summer transfer plans revealed

We revealed recently that Kwame Poku is in talks with Birmingham and other clubs heading into the summer.

Poku has excelled with Peterborough this term and could be one of many additions in the next window.

We gained an insight into Birmingham’s summer transfer plans recently, with Chris Davies’ team set to be ‘aggressive’ in the market.

Tom Brady and co. are looking to follow in the footsteps of Ipswich Town by clinching back-to-back promotions.

Meanwhile, ‘a number of Championship clubs are fearful’ of Birmingham already.
