Las Vegas Raiders $47 Million Starter Anticipated To Leave In NFL Free Agency

The clock is ticking for the Las Vegas Raiders to retain their free agents before they officially hit the open market on Wednesday. And, before that, the legal tampering period will allow those free agents to talk to teams when it opens on Monday at noon ET.

One player to keep a close eye on is safety Tre’von Moehrig, who is set to hit the open market after playing out the final year of his rookie deal in 2024. A former second-round pick of the Raiders in 2021, the TCU product has developed into a quality starting safety and figures to draw interest on the open market.

As we await Moehrig’s fate, Sportsnaut’s Matt Johnson is predicting that the young safety will leave Las Vegas to join the Baltimore Ravens in free agency.

“The Baltimore Ravens would prefer to use Kyle Hamilton more as a Swiss Army knife, moving him around the field with an emphasis on being closer to the line of scrimmage,” Johnson wrote. “That creates an opening for someone who can play deep. Moehrig’s ability to cover ground quickly helped lead to 10 pass breakups and 2 interceptions last season. He could solve some of the issues Baltimore had stopping downfield passes, all while allowing Hamilton to play his natural role.”

On the surface, the Ravens are a sensible landing spot for Moehrig. After all, the AFC powerhouse is expected to release Marcus Williams and his 2024 replacement, Ar’Darius Washington, is a pending free agent.

However, when digging a bit deeper, chances are the Ravens won’t be players for Moehrig, and for multiple reasons.

For starters, Washington played well in Williams’ stead and is a restricted free agent, so the Ravens have control over him. Baltimore is likely to retain Washington as a potential starter next to Kyle Hamilton.

Adding to that, Washington will come much cheaper than Moehrig will, which is important to note because the Ravens’ salary cap situation isn’t great. Spotrac is projecting Moehrig to land a three-year, $47.1 million deal in free agency. The Ravens, meanwhile, have just $10 million in cap space.

At the end of the day, we don’t see the Ravens landing Moehrig. Our best guess is he re-signs with the Raiders, who are in a strong position in terms of cap space.
