Derby County Opens Up On £2m Collapse Deal For Manchester City Midfielder In January

Derby County agreed a £2m deal for Manchester City midfielder Jacob Wright in January, according to The Telegraph.

Derby County had a January transfer window to forget at the start of this year. DCFC made some decent additions, but it’s more about the players that didn’t arrive at Pride Park.

There were wide reports of deals and proposed moves falling through while star defender Eiran Cashin headed for Brighton and Hove Albion.

The failings of the winter window have ;argyle contributed to their slide to the foot of the Championship table. Now, fresh details of a failed Rams deal have emerged from trusted reporter John Percy and The Telegraph.

It is said that Derby County struck a £2m deal to sign Manchester City midfielder Jacob Wright in mid-January.

The 19-year-old’s switch fell through as City were concerned about his suitability for the style of football at DCFC, even though they had agreed to hold a medical.

Wright would go on to join Championship rivals Norwich City on a loan-to-buy deal. This development is said to have ‘stunned’ Derby, who were left scrambling for midfield signings late in the window, eventually landing Harrison Armstrong from Everton on a temporary basis.

A sought-after player

Wright was clearly a sought-after player in the January transfer window. News of Derby County’s interest is new, but there were several clubs linked with him in January.

Swansea City were said to have agreed a deal for Wright late in January while Middlesbrough had him on the radar too. However, it was Norwich City who struck a deal.

Perhaps their style of play and philosophy made them a better fit for Wright in the eyes of Manchester City. They have a top young manager in Johannes Hoff Thorup too.

Concerning Derby County direction

It’s safe to say this season has been on a drastic downward spiral at Pride Park.

Derby County started fairly well but form fell away and then January was a failure. Some will argue Paul Warne should have been relieved of his duties earlier, but John Eustace’s three-game losing streak upon arrival shows the problems run deeper than the manager.

DCFC sit bottom of the Championship table and are now seven points from safety. Eustace and co face a huge uphill battle if they’re to pull themselves out of the mire over the last 11 games.
