Three Likely Trade Destinations For LaMelo Ball If The Hornets Trade Him In The Summer

The 2025 offseason could be an interesting one for the Charlotte Hornets. The front office has a handful of decisions to make about the core of the franchise, especially all-star guard LaMelo Ball.  Ball and the Hornets have struggled to see success in the five years he has been on the roster. The current front office and ownership group also aren’t the same leadership who signed Ball to his rookie max extension.

With all of that in mind and the fact that LaMelo has been less than healthy in his career playing over 51 games in only one season, it stands to reason there is a chance the front office looks to shop him this offseason. Michael Scotto of HoopsHype also reports that multiple executives will be monitoring the availability of Ball, especially after the trade of Luka Doncic.

The Hornets will likely be looking for young talent and draft capital in a potential trade sending Ball to another franchise. There are a handful of teams who could meet those requests for the Hornets and also need Ball’s production.

Brooklyn Nets

The Brooklyn Nets are a team who have the draft capital and young assets the Hornets could look to pursue. Brooklyn also has outperformed expectations this season, especially with injuries to key pieces on their roster. The Nets also did not trade forward Cam Johnson who was thought to be someone as good as gone at the deadline. Assuming the Nets don’t win the draft lottery this season, a feasible trade package could be:

Hornets Receive: Noah Clowney, Keon Johnson, Nets’ 2025 first-round pick, 76ers’ 2027 top-eight protected first-round pick, Knicks’ 2027 unprotected first-round pick, Knicks’ 2031 unprotected first-round pick

Nets Receive: LaMelo Ball

The Hornets add four first-round picks and two promising young pieces in Noah Clowney and Keon Johnson, while the Nets still keep their main core intact and keep some of their acquired draft capital from the Mikal Bridges and James Harden trades as well as their own picks in case the LaMelo experiment doesn’t work out.

The draft capital the Nets would send the Hornets way are either protected or from teams that project to be good which is why the Nets would maybe feel obliged to send four, especially after receiving five first-rounders for sending Bridges to the Knicks. Charlotte can also use the Nets pick this draft to fill one of the many missing pieces on their team depending on where it lands after the draft lottery.

Orlando Magic

The Orlando Magic are another team that could really benefit from Ball’s offensive production. They have one of the best team defenses in the league while having poor production from the guard positions. They also have a two-headed monster on offense in Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. Adding the 2021 Rookie of the Year would create an electric Big 3.

Hornets Receive: Tristan da Silva, Anthony Black, Magic’s 2025 first-round pick, Magic’s 2027 unprotected first-round pick, Magic’s 2031 unprotected first-round pick

Magic Receive: LaMelo Ball

The Hornets get two young promising pieces from the Magic who could fit in Charles Lee’s system as well as three unprotected Magic first-round picks, the furthest of which being in 2031, which could have some value if the Magic core doesn’t work out. Orlando will benefit from adding LaMelo, whose offense would add leaps and bounds to the Magic team, while its overall team defense would cover up his lackluster performance on that side of the ball.

Houston Rockets

The Houston Rockets are the last team that fits the youth and pick criteria to acquire Ball. They are an up-and-coming team who, like the Magic, have an excellent team defense that would benefit LaMelo’s style of play. They also have a mix of lob threats and shooters that, around Ball, could be a lethal combo on offense.

Hornets Receive: Reed Sheppard, Tari Eason, Fred VanVleet, the best of Brooklyn/Houston 2027 first-round pick swap, Suns’ 2027 unprotected first-round pick.

Rockets Receive: LaMelo Ball and DaQuan Jeffries

The Hornets get a great young guard in Reed Sheppard, a great young wing in Tari Eason, a good guard and cap filler in Fred VanVleet, and two potential great first-round picks. The Suns’ core seems to be falling apart which could result in their 2027 pick being a very valuable asset, and as we discussed with the potential Nets trade, they are dealing with their own rebuild, meaning that the 2027 first-round pick could also be very valuable as well.

As a Hornets fan first, I don’t want to see Ball traded. While he has the injury history and a lack of success, there is a new wave of hope sweeping across this team as new leadership takes over. The entire coaching staff and front office have been rebuilt from the ground up. The ownership also has talked at length about how this is an evaluation season, so no positive roster moves were really projected this season.

There is more of a hope that this offseason there could be moves to make this team better. Those moves could be made with or without Ball in mind. Although I don’t want to see him go, I can see a world where it happens and it makes sense for the franchise. Only time will tell what LaMelo’s future on this team is going to be.
